Car accident leaves Aberdeen woman seriously injured

She had stopped to check for an animal caught underneath her own car.

A woman suffered severe injuries after being struck by a car Wednesday afternoon in Aberdeen after she stopped to check for an animal possibly caught beneath her own car. She is now being treated for multiple broken bones.

According to Aberdeen Police, the 42-year-old Aberdeen woman had been driving her 2013 Ford Focus south on Arnold Street at around 5 p.m. when she struck a small animal near the intersection with Terrace Avenue. She stopped in the middle of the lane and got down on her knees on the driver’s side, along with a 32-year-old passenger, to make sure the animal wasn’t caught under the car.

Just then a 1997 Dodge Stratus traveling northbound struck the 42-year-old as she was checking under her car. The driver, a 66-year-old Aberdeen woman, remained on the scene as officers arrived soon after.

Police Lt. Kevin Darst said the woman suffered broken bones in her arm, leg, and a potential skull fracture during the incident. She was then transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital.

“My understanding is it’s not life threatening but she had a number of broken bones,” said Darst.

While the investigation is still ongoing, Darst said it is unlikely the 66-year-old will be charged for the accident. The 42-year-old did not activate the emergency flashers as she got out of her vehicle and she was wearing all-dark clothing in an area with no immediate street lights. It was also raining at the time.

“At this point it doesn’t look like she’s at fault for anything,” said Darst. “It was bad weather, dark clothing, so just a bad accident. It doesn’t sound like it’s anything criminal initially.”
