122 offices open countywide

Next week is candidate filing week for positions throughout Grays Harbor County. To run for office, all candidates must be filed to run for office with the Grays Harbor County Auditor’s Office by 4:30 p.m. on May 19.

This year, 122 offices are open countywide. Candidate filing begins on Monday, May 15. To file online go to http://bit.ly/2qXXXzj (Note that online filing closes at 4 p.m.).

In East County, seats up for election include the hospital district, mayoral positions in both McCleary and Oakville, and council seats in every East County city. Also open are a Port of Grays Harbor commissioner seat, school district board positions and fire district positions.

Currently, Grays Harbor County Hospital District 1 (which includes Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma) has one hospital board position open. The incumbent is Chad Searls. It has a six-year term, and is a nonpartisan position.

Hospital District 2 (Community Hospital in Aberdeen) has three positions open — one commissioner seat and two board seats. The current commissioner is Maryann Welch, and the position has a six-year term and is nonpartisan. Board position 1 is held by Robert Torgerson and also has a six-year term and is nonpartisan. Position 2 is held by Pete Scroggs. It has a 2-year unexpired term and is nonpartisan.

In Montesano, four council positions expire at the end of the year. Councilmen Ian Cope, Antony Chung and Tyler Trimble all will see their terms expire. Former councilman Chris Hutchings resigned earlier this year — his position expires at the end of the year and a replacement had yet been appointed to his seat when The Vidette went to press. Hutchings’ seat also will be available.

In Elma, three city council positions are open. Councilmen Pat Miller, David Blackett and Tom Boling are seeing their term expire this year. Those positions are four-year terms and nonpartisan.

In McCleary, the city’s top seat is open for election. Mayor Brent Schiller was appointed to the city’s top position when former mayor Gary Dent resigned. Dustin Richey was appointed to Schiller’s council seat. Richey and three other council seats (currently held by Larry Peterson, Ben Blankenship and Pam Ator) are up for election.

In Oakville, the mayoral seat also expires. Oakville’s mayor currently is Thomas Sims. Three council positions also expire this year — those positions are held by Allan Palmerson, Angelo Cilluffo and John Ruymann.

School board positions abound throughout East County: McCleary will have two council positions up for election, Montesano will have three, Elma will have three, Satsop will have three, Wishkah will have two, Mary M. Knight (candidates will need to file in Mason County) will have two, Oakville will have four, and Rochester (candidates will need to file in Thurston County) will have three.

East County fire districts also will have several open board positions, including one position at Fire District 1 (Oakville), one position at Fire District 2 (Central Park, Brady), one position at Fire District 5 (rural Elma), and one position at Fire District 12 (McCleary).
