Hoquiam 4, Castle Rock 3

Hoquiam picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Castle Rock on Wednesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (1-4 overall) trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning and tied the game on a bases-loaded walk to Ethan Byron followed by an RBI-single off the bat of Dominic Standstipher.

Hoquiam took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when two runs scored on a throwing error after Chris Bryson singled, allowing Zander Jump and Riley Montoure to cross the plate.

Castle Rock scratched across a run on a fielder’s choice ground ball in the sixth and had the tying run on base due to a Hoquiam error to lead off the seventh.

But Grizzlies pitcher Joey Bozich retired the next three batters to pick up the win and secure Hoquiam’s first victory of the season.

The Grizzlies were led by Jump, who had three hits in the game and scored a run.

“A total team effort tonight,” Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said. “The boys’ attitudes and energy made me love the game a little more. … Outstanding pitching from Riley Montoure and Joey Bozich. … Zander Jump was light out hitting. … I thought Castle Rock’s coaches were a class act and they were solid in all areas of the game.”

Aberdeen 8, Centralia 5

One day after losing to Centralia, Aberdeen flipped the script.

The Bobcats scored five runs over the final two innings to earn an 8-5 win over the Tigers on Wednesday in Centralia.

Aberdeen (3-1, 1-1 2A Evergreen) trailed 3-0 heading to the top of the fourth inning but cut into the deficit with a run off a Charlie Ancich fielder’s choice ground out in the frame.

In the fifth, the Bobcats tied the game on an Aidan Baker sacrifice fly and error that allowed Trevon Ramos and Ethan LaRocque to score.

After Centralia regained the lead with a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth, Aberdeen tied the game at 4-4 on a Bubba Jones RBI-double and took the lead when Ramos followed with a run-scoring single.

Aberdeen took advantage of Centralia miscues to add some insurance runs in the seventh, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to LaRocque followed by Jones pushing across a run after he was hit by a pitch.

Ramos then singled to score Baylor Ainsworth to stake the Cats to an 8-4 lead.

Centralia scored a run in the seventh, but Baker retired the final two Tigers he faced to secure the win.

Jones, Ramos and Ainsworth had two hits apiece to lead Aberdeen’s offense, which had eight hits in the game and also drew 10 walks.

Baker allowed an earned run on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings of relief to earn the win.

Ainsworth started for the Bobcats, allowing four runs – two earned – on six hits, three walks and a strikeout.

Aberdeen hosts Elma at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
