William E. (Bill) James

Bill James, of McCleary, passed away peacefully at Park Rose Rehabilitation Center in Tacoma on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

Bill James, of McCleary, passed away peacefully at Park Rose Rehabilitation Center in Tacoma on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018. After suffering a stroke in 2016, Bill was unable to gain back his health.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1935, at the home of his grandparents, in Pleasanton, Kan., to Robert B. and Mary L. James. The family moved to McCleary in 1942. He attended high school in Elma, Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen and the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

At the age of 13, Bill contracted polio and spent several months in a Tacoma hospital. Although the polio had some detrimental effects, Bill continues to live a full life and pursue the things he loved; traveling, fishing, tying flies and hunting, and always having a “project” to work on. He had a passionate interest in antiques, especially antique automobiles.

He began working as a marine biologist for the state Department of Fisheries in 1959 and retired from the agency in 1992.

He married Edna Smyser of Olympia in 1977 and during their years together they traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Asia and Mexico. They resided in Olympia and then McCleary until her passing in 2010.

Bill is survived by his children; Debbra Andrews, (Tom) of Montana; Kim Mason (Dale) of Scott Lake; Teresa James of McCleary; Cindy Haider (Vince) of Olympia; Nancy Larsen (Tim) of Yelm; Charles Smyser of Ohio; John Smyser (Nanette) of Bonney Lake and Mike Smyser (Stella) of Seattle; and sister Clarissa Novak (Bob). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, his parents, brother, Robert L. James and sister, Cheryl McCartney.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who provided Bill with ultimate care during these last two years.

Services for Bill will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, at the United Methodist Church in McCleary, 426 3rd St. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
