Volunteers sought for Hoquiam Arbor Day tree planting Friday afternoon

Walk and talk tour includes the planting of three trees behind Hoquiam Police station

The City of Hoquiam is looking for volunteers to help plant trees at the Hoquiam police station as part of its Arbor Day celebration Friday.

“We are planting three tilia tomentosa ‘Sterling’ trees,” said City Administrator Brian Shay.

These are deciduous shade trees with dark green leaves with silvery backsides that can grow to more than 40 feet tall and 30 feet across.

The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Hoquiam police station at 215 10th St. in Hoquiam, next door to Swanson’s. It will include a “walk and talk” tour, led by members of the city’s urban forestry committee and City of Hoquiam arborist Anna Huett. This is the city’s 10th-year Arbor Day event, and the ninth since Hoquiam was named a Tree City USA.

The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program began in 1976. Currently there are more than 3,400 communities on the list. To qualify, a city must have a tree board or department, a community tree ordinance, celebrate Arbor Day and spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry.
