Robert Ernest Wilson Jr. charged with first degree animal cruelty

Aberdeen man reportedly caught on surveillance tape shooting dog with his bow May 14

The Aberdeen man arrested May 15 for shooting a dog with an arrow was arraigned Monday in Grays Harbor Superior Court on a charge of first-degree animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty, according to county prosecutor Katie Svoboda.

Robert Ernest Wilson Jr., 50, is currently being held on $50,000 bail in the Grays Harbor County Jail. A trial is scheduled for mid-July. He is also subject to a U.S. Marshals hold for a probation violation in an unrelated federal charge.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Wilson on May 15 after finding surveillance footage reportedly showing him shooting a dog with his bow at the Grays Harbor Bowman’s Club. The dog’s owner, who resides on the 800 block of State Route 105, reported his dog came home with an arrow sticking straight through its midsection and told investigating deputies he believed the dog had been at the nearby archery club.

Wilson has an extensive criminal history. According to Emily Langlie, Public Affairs Officer for the United States Attorney’s Office, Western District of Washington, Wilson was sentenced to 105 months in prison after an arrest in Longview in 2004 for felon in possession of a firearm and counterfeit U.S. currency.

“Most recently he was back before the court for probation violations in October 2016,” said Langlie. Wilson had admitted to smoking marijuana — a violation of his probation — and was also accused of failing to comply with the drug testing program he had agreed to as part of his probation.

At the sentencing hearing for the 2004 charges, the prosecution pointed out that Wilson had prior felony convictions for theft in the first degree in 1987, attempted burglary in the second degree in 1992, felon in possession of a firearm in 1990, residential burglary and trafficking in stolen property in 1990, burglary in the first degree in 1992, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a handgun in 1995, and possession of methamphetamine and forgery in 2002.
