Hoquiam woman found competent to stand trial for first degree murder

Shana Soliz charged with killing Paul Mottinger last November at the home they shared

Shana Soliz, the 45-year-old Hoquiam woman charged with stabbing Paul Mottinger, 59, at the home they shared in Hoquiam last November, was deemed competent to stand trial for first degree murder by Superior Court Judge David Edwards at a hearing Monday.

Soliz had been undergoing “competency restoration” at Western State Hospital. Staff at the hospital provided Judge Edwards their report last week and the judge gave the go-ahead for the first degree murder case against her to proceed, according to County Prosecutor Katie Svoboda. Soliz is scheduled to be back in court Monday for a “status conference” to determine when the trial will commence.

According to court documents, Soliz stabbed Mottinger in an attack that spread from the home they shared into the street. Soliz went back into the home and there was a lengthy standoff with police before she surrendered. Mottinger later died from his injuries. Soliz remains in custody on $500,000 bond.
