• Chief Deputy F.W. McIntosh of the county sheriff’s force, who has been active in federal-county and local law enforcement for more than 20 years, today was appointed by county commissioners to succeed former Sheriff M.B. (Tiny) Taylor, resigned.

McIntosh was selected from a list of 12 applicants for the job. N.S. (Doc) Stimson of Hoquiam, who was considered a likely candidate for the office, announced this morning that he would be unable to accept the appointment because of private business.

• Frederick J. Timm, Aberdeen high school football and baseball coach, and Peter C. Nagrodski, head basketball and football mentor at Miller junior high school, have been ordered to report for pre-induction physical examinations Tuesday, the Aberdeen selective service board announced today.

The Grays Harbor County Commissioners probably won’t soon convene another meeting to gauge public sentiment on whether a state prison should be built here.

Commissioners Dick Dixon of Aberdeen, Bob Paylor of Hoquiam and Bill Pine of Porter each say it’s premature to call more meetings until it’s known whether Grays Harbor is even a finalist in the prison search.

Opponents say they fear that if Grays Harbor makes the short list, there’s no turning back. But Commissioner Dixon said, “This isn’t the 11th hour.”

If Grays Harbor is still in the running, all three commissioners like the idea of putting an advisory ballot before the voters during the fall election.

Actress Linda Evans of “Dynasty” and “Big Valley” fame was among the 60 opponents led by chiropractor Fred Loertscher of Montesano who urged the Aberdeen City Council Wednesday to hold at least one more public meeting so they could air their objections.

The Aberdeen council members lobbed the ball to the county commissioners, saying they endorsed the application, but it’s a countywide issue and if there’s to be another meeting it should be called by the commissioners.

South Bend School Board members gave conditional approval this week for year-round elementary school.

But even it all goes well, the year-round schedule won’t begin until 1995.

The extra time will be used to bring parents into the process and to educate the community about what year-round schooling means, said Superintendent Virgie Fryrear. The extra time also will be used to assess whether to bring the high school into the year-round plan. Changing the high school’s schedule presents more of a problem than the elementary school because of high school athletics, she said.
