More than 1,400 parents and friends of McDermoth school students last night attended the parents’ night “open house” sponsored by the school in conjunction with the Parent-Teachers association.

The affair was designed to give the parents of every student an opportunity to visit classrooms, examine exhibits of classwork, and meet members of the faculty.

Four Weatherwax High School student musicians have been selected to play for a concert concluding the next biennial Music Educator’s National Conference, set for Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.

Among the four is Dawn Asikainen, a senior, who will play the viola in the 200-student orchestra.

Also playing in the big orchestra will be Cynthia Ingram, a junior, who plays the violin.

Another local student who will be performing will be Janet Karamatic, a junior who will sing in the chorus.

And Donna Kaiyala, a junior, will play in the band, performing on her oboe.

Local instructors attending the conference will be Hampton Wines, Weatherwax band director, James Morrison, choir director and J. Gordon Edlund, orchestra director.

• An open house of the recently overhauled Aberdeen fire hall on Market Street will be held from 1 to 4 on March 20. The two new firefighting rigs that have recently arrived in Aberdeen, including the $306,620 “telesquirt” pumper, will be on display. The new pumpers replaced two that date back to the 1960s.

• Hoquiam’s 4th annual Ethnic Heritage Festival starts in Italy tonight with a spaghetti dinner — believe me you won’t leave hungry — and lots of entertainment in the gym of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church. On Saturday, Hoquiam Rotarians will be serving a splendid ethnic breakfast from 7:30 until noon at the YMCA.

Throughout the weekend entertainment including Olympia Highlanders, Kokon Taiko Japanese drummers, Ballyglas Irish Dancers and the Bavarian Village band are scheduled at the Y, Central School and the Hoquiam Eagles.
