Long Beach cranberry growers are seeking 100 cranberry pickers from the South Bend and Raymond area.

The peak of the season will come about Oct. 1 but picking this year probably will get under way around Sept. 15. Mothers with well grown children are wanted in the bogs, either for weekends or the season. The picking crews will be well chaperones and supervised if school children can be spared for work.

It is planned to seek vacations of the Long Beach and Ilwaco schools to permit students to work in the bogs during the season.

Aberdeen Mayor Walt Failor recently inspected a totem pole that will soon be standing in a city park now under construction at the south end of the Chehalis River Bridge.

The pole is a gift from the Twin Harbors Area Council of Boy Scouts. The pole, which stood at the gateway of the skillerama area of the World Scout Jamboree at Farragut State Park, Idaho, early this month, was carved by Jack Sorrells, adviser to the Order of the Arrow, a national honor camping society which has a chapter in the council.

• This year, the staff at A.J West Elementary School will study a “continuous learning calendar” and develop plans to implement it during the 1993-94 school year.

“How we’re going to do it is still really tentative,” said Principal Bill O’Donnell. “We’re going to look at lots of models.”

The school will likely settle on blocks of roughly 45 days of instruction followed by 15 days off. If the plan works at A.J. West, other schools in the district may also adopt such a plan.

• The Aro Glass Clubber won seven straight games this weekend in Spanaway to win the state U.S. Slow Pitch Softball Association Over 35 Masters Rec Tournament.

“It took us a while to get used to the (unorthodox flat style) pitching permitted in the tournament,” said Clubber coach Ken Waite, who was named the MVP of the tourney, hitting .697 with 16 hits in 23 at bats. “We worked real hard for this. There was a lot of extra effort put forth this weekend and there are a lot of hurting bodies.”

Outfielders Steve Irion and Al Carter gutted out both days with ailing legs, while others had aching muscles.

Curtis Salgado will be performing Thursday at Sidney’s in downtown Aberdeen.

Salgado performed with the Robert Cray Band from 1977 to 1982. He was the inspiration for the Blues Brothers act, when John Belushi spotted Salgado performing at the Eugene Hotel, while Belushi was in town making the movie “Animal House.”

The first album by Belushi and Dan Akroyd, as the stylish mobsters of rock and roll, was dedicated to Salado, who befriended the late comedian and actor.

Tickets for Thursday’s show are $10.
