Twice during the past month, the harsh realities of war have been brought home to North Beach residents.

For two sons of this relatively small community already have made the supreme sacrifice in defense of their country.

Early last month, Richard Jobb, Moclips Marine, was killed in action in the South Pacific. He would have been 23 years of age last Wednesday.

Now parents of Chuck Baker, for six and a half years a submarine man, have received word that he was one of the victims in the sinking of the Argonaut, the nation’s largest submarine. He was 32.

Although a difference of nine years in age separated them, the boys were at Moclips school at the same time, Baker a football and basketball player in the high school and Jobb in grade school and later to emulate Baker on the gridiron and gym court. Many times they frolicked on the white beach below the school house.

A 14-ton vault door which has protected the holdings of Harbor safety deposit box renters for 40 years has been transferred to Seattle for polishing and refinishing so it can perform the same service for another 40 years or more.

The round door and its facing were removed from the Aberdeen branch of the National Bank of Commerce Saturday. It will be installed in the vault of the new bank building, now under construction and due to open in late summer.

Myron Williams, the branch’s assistant cashier, described the door as an “antique. They don’t make round ones anymore, but we still get a lot of protection out of it.”

• Hoquiam’s 6-5 center, John Quigg, led the Grizzly squad in three categories for the season just completed according to figures compiled by statistician Art Anderson.

Hundreds of Harborites took in Hoquiam’s Ethnic Heritage Festival Saturday.

When the Mexican Ballet Folklorico”Ollin” took the floor, Marco Berber of Aberdeen clapped and moved his feet. Berber, who immigrated to the Harbor from Mexico, said, “It’s nice to have this kind of event. The Harbor really needs some cultural events.”

“It’s a good little festival,” said Ian Jamison, who was handling the lighting. “I think it’s grown a little bit.”

“It’s really varied,” echoed Dan Mortenson, the sound man. “It’s nice to see the community come together for this.”

This is the third year of the multi-cultural festival at Hoquiam. Live music, spicy food booths and exhibits continue today.
