Founders dinner moved; proceeds to benefit museum

The organizers of Aberdeen’s Founders Day Dinner had to make some last-minute decisions after the June 9 fire destroyed the Armory Building.

The annual event, which in the past had been held at the Aberdeen Museum of History, suddenly needed a new venue.

The Founders Day co-chairwomen — Jan Bess and City Council member Karen Rowe — were able to make arrangements a week later with Soiree on Broadway to host the dinner on Saturday.

Welcome Inn will still cater the prime rib dinner, and Six Pack Pretty will perform as originally scheduled.

And, while the dinner has served in the past as a fundraiser for Founders Day events, this year’s proceeds will be given to the museum.

“We hope it’ll help with the incidentals they need before the insurance checks come in,” said Bess, noting that the event is meant to celebrate Aberdeen’s history, after all.

Descendants of Aberdeen founder Sam Benn and pioneer lumberman A.J. West will be present at next week’s parade, and Rowe said both families also have pledged to donate items to help rebuild the museum’s collection after the fire.

She said the Wests will bring original drawings, blueprints and photos of the A.J. West mill, plus the first piece of wood cut at that mill.

Saturday’s event will begin at 5 p.m. at Soiree on Broadway. Tickets are available for $30 at GH Wine Sellars, Steam Donkey and City Center Drug.
