With just 13 athletes, Raymond Seagulls sweep team competitions at Henrie-Weisel meet

Morgan Anderson, Kyra Gardner win four events apiece to lead Raymond

The Raymond High School boys and girls track and field teams won their respective team competitions at the Henrie-Weisel Tri-District Meet on Thursday at Leo Rubstello Track in Raymond.

The Raymond boys team edged South Bend 52-21, with Seagulls sophomore Morgan Anderson leading the way. Anderson won the 110-meter hurdles (17.39), the pole vault (9-06.00), the triple jump (38-07.00) and tied South Bend’s Devin Wirkkala in the high jump (5-06.00).

Willapa Valley scored 38 points to place third.

The Seagulls girls team scored 66 points and was also led by a four-event winner in junior Kyra Gardner. The reigning 2B state high-jump champion took first place in the 110-meter hurdles (17.72), the long jump (16-00.00), the triple jump (34-08.75) and her signature event, the high jump (5-04.00).

Willapa Valley placed second with 46 points with South Bend finishing third with 41 points.

“Our kids had a great meet. We only had 13 kids competing today, so we knew going in that they would really have to step up and perform to have a chance at winning,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said, adding with a depleted team, several of his athletes stepped out of their comfort zone to compete in events they are not normally accustomed to. “Several of our kids stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something new to help the team score points. I’m very proud of the effort that everyone gave.”

Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said he was pleased with what he saw from his team on Thursday.

“All in all a good overall performance, I’m pleased with the way the kids competed today,” he said. “They had a pretty high volume workload this week so their a little tired.”
