Weekend Wrestling Roundup: Another year, another district title for Aberdeen’s girls wrestling program

Also: Aberdeen boys take second at 2A sub-regionals; Results for local 1A, 2B teams

One word sums up the Aberdeen High School girls wrestling team’s recent history in the 2A Sub-Regionals 3 Tournament: Dominant.

Nine Bobcats made it to their respective title matches with six being crowned sub-regional champion, as Aberdeen ran away with its unprecedented seventh consecutive district title on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Aberdeen High School.

The Bobcats were paced by Madelynn Machowek (100 pounds), Aili Scott (115), Hailey Wilson (120), Raegan Portmann (140), Kya Roundtree (170) and Katie Gakin (190), each of whom won championships in their individual weight classes.

Emmersyn Yakovich (110), Felicia Bell (125) and Aman Cheema (155) each placed second for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen cruised to victory with 238 points, 100 points better than league rival WF West.

“As a coach, I couldn’t be any happier from my teams performance,” Bobcats head coach Craig Yakovich said. “With all ups and downs this year to come out and perform like this in front of the home crowd was amazing.”

Shelton (75 points), Centralia (70) and Rainier (65) rounded out the top five.

Hoquiam was paced by Emma Johnson, who earned a trip to the regional finals with a victory over Bell in the title match of the 125-pound weight class.

Ocosta’s Jettane Park placed third in the 140-pound class to earn a spot in regionals, as did Elma’s Declyn Foster (155, 3rd) and Hoquiam’s Zoey Cook (155, 4th).

Montesano also had a district champion in Kya Roundtree, who won via pinfall over Tenino’s Dakota Lees to win the 170-pound title.

Raymond’s Nina Siribun pinned Rochester’s Emily Weddle to place first in the 235-pound weight class and earn a sub-district title in the process.

Other local teams placing at the tournament were Hoquiam (40 points, 10th), Montesano (31 points, 11th), Ocosta (25 points, 14th), Raymond (24 points, 15th), Elma (18 points, 16th tie), North Beach (18 points, 16th tie).

Bobcats place second at sub-regionals

Aberdeen’s Talatheon Warness, Drew Lock and Liam Heikkila each won their respective weight classes to lead the Bobcats to a second-place finish at the 2A Evergreen Conference Sub-Regional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Shelton High School.

Aberdeen scored 208.5 points to finish second behind league-champion WF West (386 points).

Shelton (174.5 points), Tumwater (155.5 points) and Centralia (54.5 points) rounded out the top five.

Warness defeated Tumwater’s Carlos Juarez-Estrada by a 12-1 major decision to win the 106 pound sub-regional title.

Drew Lock pinned Shelton’s Tyler Fleshman 3:04 into the match to claim the 126-pound championship and Heikkila won via pinfall over WF West’s Kyle Nowles at 5:05 to win the 195-pound title.

Aberdeen’s Mikey Hatton (113 pounds, 3rd), Tyler Caskey (113 pounds, 4th), Joel Nelson (120 pounds, 2nd), Shane Glowachi (138 pounds, 4th), Ethan Trader (145 pounds, 4th), Aiden Watkins (152 pounds, 2nd), and Erick Hayter-Ramsey (285 pounds, 2nd) each placed in the top four of their respective weight classes to advance to the 2A Regional 3 meet in Washougal on Saturday.

Monte, Elma, Hoquiam compete at 1A Evergreen Sub-Districts

Montesano, Elma and Hoquiam placed second through fourth behind Eatonville at the 1A Evergreen League Sub-District meet on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Eatonville High School.

Eatonville scored 260 points to claim the league title with Montesano (219 points), Elma (146 points), Hoquiam (88 points) and Tenino (58 points) rounding out the top five.

Montesano was paced by Jared Whisenhunt, who won via forfeit over teammate Gabe Pyhala in the 152-pound final.

Elma had three league champions with Jordan Meadows (106 pounds), Austin Salazar (220 pounds) and Donovan Bishop (285 pounds) each earning pinfall wins in their respective championship matches to secure a spot in next week’s regional meet.

Hoquiam’s Oliver Bryson (145 pounds) earned a league title with a pinfall victory over Eatonville’s Zakary Lackey and teammate Anthony Burtenshaw defeated Montesano’s Nathan Ryker via fall at 2:49 to win the 170-pound title.

Elma, Hoquiam and Montesano will compete at the 1A Region 1 meet on Saturday at Hoquiam High School.

Three Twin Harbors athletes win titles at 1B/2B District 4 sub-regionals

North Beach wrestlers Westin Fruh and Johnathan Jerome, and Willapa Harbor’s Tyson Portmann won their respective weight classes at the 1B/2B District 4 Sub-Regional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Ocosta High School.

Fruh earned a 16-5 major decision over Wahkiakum’s Gabriel Moon to win the 195-pound title, while teammate Jerome earned an 11-10 decision over Forks’ Sloan Tamaua.

Portmann won the 132-pound weight class title after winning via technical fall (15-0) over Stevenson’s Soloman Mahoney.

North Beach’s Wyeland Lomedico (120 pounds, 2nd); Willapa Harbor’s Carson Borden (126 pounds, 2nd), Lucas Swogger (138 pounds, 3rd) and Hudson Barnum (152 pounds, 4th); Ocosta’s Andrew Martin (138 pounds, 4th) and Dylan Hollingsworth (160 pounds, 3rd) each placed in the top four of their respective weight classes.
