Local golfer wins Arizona club championship

Hoquiam resident Gretchen Klein played consistent, high-IQ golf over three rounds to win the 2022 Ladies Club Championship at the Sun City Grand golf resort in Surprise, Arizona in early April.

Klein shot a 78-74-79 for her three rounds, winning the title over venerable club-champion Rosanne Wasilchuk by eight strokes.

Klein trailed Wasilchuk by one stroke after the first round, but shot a fantastic second round — highlighted by a 3-under par 33 on the front nine — to take a nine-stroke lead entering the final round.

“It was my first year playing down there for the winter. I played good all winter and my game has improved.,” said Klein, who said she “played defensively” in the third round to preserve her lead. “I kind of felt some pressure (entering the final round) because you still have to play good and go out and do it. … With golf, anything can happen so quickly.”

Playing intelligent golf, Klein only lost one stroke off her lead in the third round, giving her the club title over the more than 100 tournament entrants.

“It was a biggie to me,” Klein said of her victory. “It was a good one. It ranks right up there.”

After the competiton, Klein was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a “2022 Ladies Club Championship” golf cart license plate frame.
