Host Wildcats win team title at Ocosta Invite wrestling meet

WRESTLING

Ocosta Invitational

WESTPORT — Despite having a smaller team than some of the other 10 schools at the Ocosta Invitational on Saturday, the host Wildcats emerged victorious in the team competition with three individual titles as well.

Ocosta’s Kaleb Orton (126 pounds), Cosmo Silver (145) and Kalvyn Scott (170) each came away with the top prize at their respective weight classes to propel the Wildcats to 177.5 team points. Rochester finished second with 161 points, while Willapa Harbor placed sixth with 98 and North Beach finished eighth with 59 points.

Twin Harbors wrestlers claimed five titles on the day with Willapa Harbor’s Joseph Lewis (138) and North Beach’s Seth Bridge (285) also taking home first-place hardware.

“Going in, Rochester, Tenino and Adna had more kids than us and we managed to get six in the finals and score those place points,” Ocosta coach Kevin Goodrich said. “For our kids to be able to start the season that way, with some good, tough wrestling and a team win sets the tone for the season.”

Ocosta’s Sam Quinby (138), Matthew Hart (152) and Hayden Hoff (220) all placed second individually. Willapa Harbor’s Christian Anderson (285) was the only other Twin Harbors wrestler to face off in a title match.

While Goodrich said he was proud of all three of the Ocosta champions, he said Orton’s title win was especially impressive. Orton trailed 5-0 after one round, but was able to get a reverse on his feet early in the second and take Luke Goozee of Knappa, Ore., to his back and get the pin at 2:34.

“It was a great start to the season,” Aberdeen girls coach Craig Yakovich said. “We competed tough in every match and got a lot of wins and a lot of pins. It was overall a good showing and hopefully the rest of the season keeps going that way.”

Aberdeen hosts Elma on Thursday.

Yelm tourney

Hoquiam’s Alexis Delahanty advanced to the 110-pound semifinals but was forced to default due to a hyperextended knee.

Grizzly coach Buck Giles said only six of his 10 wrestlers competed Saturday due to injuries and college testing. The Grizzlies are expected to be at full strength when they compete in Centralia’s Tiger Classic on Saturday.

MONTESANO — Jordan Spradlin scored 28 points as Montesano beat Raymond in a non-league game Saturday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

In addition to pulling down eight rebounds, the 6-foot-1 Spradlin doled out perhaps a half-dozen assists as she was able to find the open player against a collapsing Raymond defense.

The Bulldogs (2-0) led 49-18 after three quarters before the Seagulls (1-1) closed the gap against Monte reserves.

“I thought we played really well, especially on the defensive end,” Monte coach Julie Graves said. “I know they have some kids who can shoot the ball and we closed out on their shooters really well.”

After Livvie Ogilvie’s free throw with about one minute remaining gave the Indians a 32-29 lead in a raggedly played contest, Northwest Christian responded with the next three points to tie it.

Reidinger hit the second of two free throws for what proved to be the winning margin. The Navigators missed their final shot and the Indians (1-1) were able to dribble out the final six seconds.

Jessica Sanchez and Reidinger each recorded double-doubles for the Indians. Sanchez contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Reidinger added 12 points and 10 boards.

Sanchez, however, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and backcourt mate Katelyn Doyle was also sidelined due to an injury.

RIDGEFIELD — Three players scored in double figures as Ridgefield topped Aberdeen in a non-league game Saturday at Ridgefield.

The Spudders maintained slight advantages in every quarter. Aberdeen’s cause wasn’t helped when starting post Braden Castleberry-Taylor sustained a shoulder injury in the first half.

Up 27-24 at the half, Ridgefield gained some separation in the third quarter.

“It seemed like the third quarter was the biggest difference and that’s on me,” AHS coach Mark Buckman said. “They were running back picks and I did not make the necessary defensive adjustments.”

In all, however, Buckman said this “was our best effort on the road so far.”

Victor Gomez paced the Bobcats (0-3) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Josh Collett chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds and Alonzo Coburn came off the bench to contribute three assists.

ONTARIO, Ore. — Grays Harbor College came up just short against Treasure Valley Community College in a non-divisional game at TVCC on Saturday.

The Chuckars jumped up by nine points after the first quarter, and while the Chokers chipped away at the lead, Grays Harbor’s comeback fell short. In the fourth quarter, Angela Sikora heated up from 3-point range and hit back-to-back-to-back treys to spark a 16-3 run for the Chokers.

Down by one point with three seconds left in the game, GHC had one last chance to win the game but the Chokers were unable to get a shot off on a sideline play.

Cardinals 98, Chokers 77

PORT ANGELES — After a strong start, an injury derailed Grays Harbor College’s effort against Skagit Valley on Saturday in a non-divisional contest at Peninsula College.

GHC (2-2) jumped out to a 14-2 lead early in the game, but with just four minutes off the clock, Choker guard Jacob Rainey went down with a knee injury and GHC was never able to regain its chemistry.

“We just couldn’t get going,” GHC coach Alonzo Cole said. “Our defense was lackluster and we couldn’t get our shots going. We didn’t get back on defense like we should and they put a zone up against us and we just couldn’t click today. We have some work to do.”

Skagit led 33-31 at halftime, but the Cardinals controlled the second half and outscored the Chokers by 19 points.

Jamari Thomas came off the bench for GHC to score a team-high 19 points. John Robinson scored 18 points and added eight rebounds, while Trevion Cotton scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
