Weekend Roundup: Aberdeen wrestlers successful at River Ridge Rumble

Bobcats girls team places first overall; boys team takes second

The Aberdeen boys and girls wrestling programs found success at the River Ridge Rumble on Saturday in Lacey.

Led by weight-class victories from Rylee Waltee (106 pounds), Raegan Portmann (145), Kya Roundtree (170) and Katie Gakin (190), the Bobcats girls took the team title with a total of 180 points, easily besting WF West (128) and third place Kelso (80).

“I couldn’t be happier with the overall team performance they wrestled phenomenally all day, but I would like to cite two individuals, Raegan Portmann and Katie Gakin,” Aberdeen head coach Craig Yakovich said. “Raegan went out and dominated an opponent in the finals who was Washington Wrestling Reports state-ranked No. 2 wrestler in her weight class and Katie continued her amazing season by not only remaining undefeated, but all of her matches have ended this season by fall or technical fall which is stoppage due to a 15 point lead.”

The Aberdeen boys team finished second with 123 points behind Puyallup (151) and just a few points ahead of third place Steliacoom (119.5).

The Bobcats were led by Talatheon Warness, who defeated Capital’s Johnson Nguyen via pinfall in 0:43 to win the 106 pound weight class title.

Mikey Hatton placed second in the 113 pound weight class with Joel Nelson (120 pounds) and Ethan Trader (145) placing third in their respective classes for the Bobcats.

PREP BOYS SWIMMING

Aberdeen competes at Camas Multi-Team Duals

Scored like a dual meet, but set up like an invitational, the Camas Multi-Team Duals gave Aberdeen a taste of life in the southern section of District IV at Lacamas Athletic Club in Camas on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats shook off the road dust quickly to go 6-2 in the duals, with several top-three finishes overall leading the way.

Aberdeen knocked off Columbia River, Fort Vancouver, Hudson’s Bay, Seton Catholic, Skyview and Washougal, but fell to Hockinson and host Camas.

“Strong competition, strong swims and strong finishes,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “It was a format we weren’t familiar with, so we just swam it like it was an invitational. After that, it was a great day to be a Bobcat. I wasn’t worried about the times, just how the boys competed. They did a great job.”

Junior Zach Parker led the Bobcats with a second-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly and swam the fly leg of the 200 medley relay with Tyler Bates, Foster Patterson and Colton Burns.

Freshman Denny Linker added a third-place finish in the 100 fly and took fourth overall in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Bates took third in the 100 backstroke and anchored the third-place 400 free relay with Burns, Jamieson Berney and Linker.

Coach Burns cited Austin Weiss, Kevin Eng, Toby Patterson, Jacob Hallak, Jacob Natwick and Logen Seguin for their performances.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen will host Shelton on Senior Day at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.
