Wednesday Sports Roundup: Ashley’s two free throws push Willapa Valley past rival Raymond

BOYS BASKETBALL

Vikings 44, Seagulls 43

MENLO — Ryon Ashley hit the two biggest free throws of his career with less than a second on the clock to lift Willapa Valley over Raymond in a Pacific 2B League game at Tenoski Gym on Wednesday.

The two teams were tied 42-42 when the Gulls were able to inbound the ball to Kason Koski, who was fouled. The senior stepped up and hit what looked to be the game-winning shot by making the front end, but he missed the second and Ashley was fouled on the rebound to go to the line.

The junior had missed seven free throws in a row when the Vikings defeated the Seagulls on Saturday, but when he stepped to the line with .8 seconds left in the contest on Wednesday he was right on the mark. Ashley added his 15th and 16th points on the night to give Valley the victory.

“I’m so proud of (Ryon),” Valley coach Jay Pearson said. “He made two of the biggest free throws in our program to win the game, not to mention denying Koski defensively the whole game. It was a total team effort and everyone knows their role. We were lucky at the end.”

Pearson cited Koski, who finished with 16 points for a strong effort.

“Two games in a row we had to play them and they controlled both games,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “We simply got outplayed. The score was tight for most of the game, but it felt like the entire game we had to fight to stay in it.”

Matt Pearson led the Vikings with 22 points, while Peter Hamilton grabbed 11 rebounds.

Willapa Valley (4-5, 8-5) travels to North Beach on Friday, while Raymond (5-3, 8-4) travels to Life Christian Academy on Saturday.

NASELLE — A few defensive tweaks helped South Bend shut down Naselle in the second half and edge past the Comets in a non-league game at Naselle on Wednesday.

Trailing by three points going into the second half, the Indians (5-8) worked to key on the Comets two top scorers and held Naselle to just nine points over the final two quarters.

“We made some adjustments and we played really well defensively in the second half to only allow nine points,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “Overall, it took everybody. We made smart decisions in the second half and rebounded well defensively. I’m very proud of that second half effort.”

Karley Reidinger led the Tribe with 20 points, while Jessica Sanchez scored nine points, dished out seven assists and swiped four steals. The pair of sophomores each grabbed 15 rebounds.
