Wednesday Roundup: Hoquiam defense shuts down Ocosta in win

Hoquiam got off to a good start en route to a 57-32 non-league victory over Ocosta on Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Hoquiam (9-3) outscored Ocosta (6-7) 12-0 in the first quarter and held a 26-13 lead at the half.

The Grizzlies put the game out of reach with a 23-5 third quarter.

“We got off to a good start defensively and played hard and tough throughout the game,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said.

Senior guard Michael Lorton Watkins had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while senior Justice Stankavich led Hoquiam with 18 points.

Zander Jump added 10 points and Aiden Butcher scored five points and had eight rebounds in his first varsity start for Hoquiam.

Josh Figueroa led Ocosta with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals while Tarren Lewis and Xander Prigmore scored six points apiece for the Wildcats.

“We did not have our best game tonight,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “After a fairly good practice yesterday, where I thought we had a pretty good game plan in place, we did not step on the court and execute. Hoquiam did a good job of pressuring us into a lot of forced shots and really took us out of our rhythm.”

Ocosta plays at Raymond at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Hoquiam takes on Eatonville at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Shelton 55, Aberdeen 42

A big fourth quarter by Shelton led to a 55-42 loss for Aberdeen on Wednesday at Sam Benn Gym in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (2-9, 2-4 2A Evergreen) trailed 23-21 at the half and 33-28 entering the fourth quarter, but Shelton (6-5, 3-3) outscored Aberdeen 22-14 in the final period.

Junior guard Manny Garcia led Aberdeen with 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting (31%) to go along with six rebounds.

Junior Baylor Ainsworth scored nine points for a Bobcats team that shot 14 of 50 from the field (28%) and 5 of 20 from beyond the arc (25%).

With the loss, Aberdeen falls to fifth place in the 2A Evergreen League, one game behind the Highclimbers for fourth place.

Aberdeen hosts second-place Black Hills at 7 p.m. Friday.

Willapa Valley 71, Mossyrock 58

Willapa Valley picked up a key league victory with a 71-58 win over fifth-ranked Mossyrock on Wednesday in Menlo.

Willapa Valley (8-4, 5-0 1B Columbia Valley) trailed 34-27 at halftime before erupting for 44 points and outscoring Mossyrock (6-2, 2-1) 21-6 in the third quarter to secure the victory.

Valley was down double-digits on three separate occasions throughout the game, trailing by as much as 13 points in the third quarter before embarking on the comeback.

“All of a sudden, things just clicked,” Willapa Valley head coach Jay Pearson said. “Tonight, we attacked the basket and just kept battling.”

Willapa Valley’s Riley Pearson led the way with 21 points including a perfect 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Derek Fluke had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Kolten Fluke had 14 points, seven rebounds and went 5 of 8 from the charity stripe for Willapa Valley.

Nathan Fluke added nine points in his first varsity start, filling in for senior Garrett Keeton, who was out due to illness.

Willapa Valley went 22 for 27 from the free-throw line (82%) and outrebounded Mossyrock 36-30.

Valley plays at Columbia Adventist at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Centralia 94, Grays Harbor 67

Grays Harbor College is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to Centralia 94-67 on Wednesday in Aberdeen.

Playing its first game in nearly a month and its home-opener, the Chokers (0-4, 0-1 NWAC West) fell behind 45-31 at the half and shot 24 for 72 from the field (33.3%), including 5 of 33 from 3-point range (15.2%).

Jeshua Hardie led the Chokers with 23 points on 8-of-20 shooting (40%), grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.

Former Aberdeen standout Gio Pisani scored 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting (44.4%), including 3 of 8 from the 3-point line (37.5%), and grabbed six rebounds for GHC.

Jihad Watson added 10 points and three rebounds off the bench for the Chokers.

The Chokers play at Lower Columbia College at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
