CENTRALIA — Scoring twice within a four-minute span in the first half, Montesano blanked Centralia in a non-league match Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.
Montesano’s Samantha Stanfield opened the scoring in the 19th minute by taking a midfield pass from Brooke Streeter and beating a charging goalkeeper.
Four minutes later, Peyton Poler lofted a rebound over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net.
Montesano goalkeeper Haylee Perkinson kept the game scoreless in the 15th minute by stopping a Centralia penalty kick.
Bulldog coach Fidel Sanchez said his team played particularly well in the first half.
“I think we played a pretty decent game on the road against a 2A opponent,” Sanchez said.
Poler received Monte’s Player of the Game award.
Ellie Jones scored the hat trick to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-0 JV victory.
Montesano (4-1) remains on the road Thursday against Seton Catholic.
Bearcats 4, Eagles 2
CHEHALIS — Host Chehalis scored twice in the final 15 minutes to beat Elma in a non-league contest Tuesday at Chehalis.
The Eagles (4-2-1) tied it at 2-2 on Brooke Sutherby’s unassisted goal in the 64th minute. The Bearcats, however, answered two minutes later and added an insurance goal in the 70th minute.
Kassedy Olson scored Elma’s first goal on a cross from Sutherby in the seventh minute.
“They were really fast to the ball and were really good with touches,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said of Chehalis. “We tried to hold our own, but they just handled the ball a little better than we did.”
Sutherby, up front, and defender Kaya Aiken were commended by Rockey for fine play.
The Eagles travel to Tacoma on Friday to face Charles Wright Academy.
Knights 6, Grizzlies 2
Taking command with five successive goals, King’s Way Christian beat Hoquiam in a non-league match Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.
The Grizzlies forged a 1-1 tie when freshman Sadie Carlyle beat the King’s Way goalkeeper on a 1-on-1 thrust in the 15th minute.
The Knights, however, answered in the 17th minute and also scored in the 30th and 38th minutes to go up 4-1 at the half.
Hoquiam’s second goal came in the final minute. Freshman Ainsley Estes settled a pass from Taylor Strom following a corner kick and scored from inside the box.
Grizzly coach Drew Grannemann said his team played well against the talented and far more experienced Knights.
“We’re getting better at possession,” Grannemann said.
Hoquiam goalkeeper Jade Cox made 17 saves. Emily Elders, another freshman, was cited for defensive play.
The Grizzlies (0-3-1) host Castle Rock on Thursday.
VOLLEYBALL
Wildcats win in three
WESTPORT — Unbeaten Ocosta put on an impressive hitting display in trouncing Willapa Valley, 25-12, 25-21, 25-13, in a non-league match Tuesday at Westport.
Counting dinks, three Wildcats combined for 59 kills. Kaylee Barnum had 22, Layne Martin 19 and Erika Snider 18.
Alivia Marsh also had an outstanding match at the net with six solo blocks and six assists. Lillyan Barnum enjoyed a 100 percent serving night for the Wildcats (4-0).
“We hit the ball tonight and we also had quite a few blocks,” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said.
“They were firing on all cylinders tonight,” Viking coach Lori Snodgrass agreed. “We simply sent too many free balls over the net and they capitalized on it.”
Willapa Valley setter Sidney Pollard brought up nine digs and was cited for hustle. Hallee Layman topped Viking hitters with four.
The Vikings took the JV match, 25-16, 25-10.
On Thursday, the Wildcats visit Raymond while Willapa Valley (3-2) host South Bend.
Gulls in three
SOUTH BEND — Makenna Williams served 14 consecutive points in the second set to highlight Raymond’s 25-22, 25-7, 25-21 win over South Bend in non-league play Tuesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.
Although sub-par due to a virus, Karlee Freeman had 13 kills for the Gulls (4-1). Teammate Maddi Murray delivered 10 kills in what coach Bob Swogger termed her best overall match.
Swogger also cited libero Kennis Harland for digging.
“We played well, considering how we were feeling,” Swogger said. “Our passing was off in the first and third sets, but we attacked well when our passing was there and our serving was tough.”
South Bend coach Tricia Needham was disappointed in the Tribe’s play.
“I think that my team lacked communication tonight,” she said.
Jessica Sanchez had seven kills and Joshlynne Johnson brought up 10 digs for the Indians (2-2). Livvie Ogilvie was cited for serving.
South Bend won the JV match, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10, with Hailey Smith and Zaira Medina commended for fine play.
On Thursday, Raymond hosts Ocosta while South Bend makes the short trip to Willapa Valley.
Wolves top Elma in four
ELMA — Perennial Class 2A power Black Hills handed Elma its first loss, 25-15, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, in a non-league match Tuesday at Elma.
The Wolves had the better of several long rallies. Considering the caliber of opposition, however, Eagle coach Kendra Henry was very happy with her team’s play.
“They’re the best (team) we’re going to face all year,” she said. “They’re a well-rounded team but we came out and played scrappy. We never gave up and battled on every point.”
The Eagles (4-1) received outstanding back-row play from Ana Perez (20 digs) and Quin Mikel (14 digs and 12 kills).
Black Hills also won the JV match, 25-12, 25-13.
The Eagles visit Chehalis on Thursday.
Grizzlies lose in three
CASTLE ROCK — Taking control of the net, Castle Rock downed Hoquiam, 25-13, 25-20, 25-14, in a non-league match Tuesday at Castle Rock.
Although acknowledging her team was playing defense for most of the match, Grizzly coach Heather Bozich said her team was more competitive than the scores indicated.
“We had a lot of ups and downs and the downs were a little bit longer than our ups,” Bozich said.
Bozich credited ReyLynn Dunn and Karlie Krohn for outstanding back-row play. Dunn had 16 digs and Krohn 11.
Kamimi Papp delivered 11 kills and Kacey Pelan had 11 assists for Hoquiam (3-3).
Castle Rock won the JV match in two sets.
The Grizzlies visit Centralia on Thursday.
Bulldogs fall in four
MONTESANO — Class 2A Centralia stayed on the attack most of the way to beat Montesano, 25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 25-25, in a non-league match Tuesday night at Montesano.
Montesano’s Hannah Hatcher brought up 15 digs and was commended by Bulldog coach Renee Volz for her hustle and leadership. But the Bulldogs (2-3) had difficulty generating offense, as McKenna Miller was the team leader in kills with three.
“We improved on our passing and our serving,” Monte coach Renee Volz said.
Montesano won both the JV (23-25, 25-6, 15-7) and C squad (25-10, 25-13) matches.
