Montesano showed no signs of rust coming off Spring Break as the Bulldogs handled Elma 16-0 in four innings on Tuesday in Montesano.

Montesano (6-2 overall, 1-1 1A Evergreen) scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning before Elma recorded an out. After a leadoff walk to right fielder Liv Robinson, Monte proceeded to knock seven consecutive base hits against Elma pitchers, highlighted by a triple down the left-field line off the bat of Monte pitcher Riley Timmons, scoring Ember Jones in the process.

By the time the dust settled on the first inning, Montesano led 9-0.

“We’ve been struggling with being aggressive at the plate on good pitches. We’ve been aggressive at the plate on bad pitches,” Monte head coach Pat Pace admitted. “I think we did a much better job waiting for our (pitch) and actually had some very aggressive takes up there. I though our girls came out and hit the way they should have been hitting, even in March. I was really happy with the way they hit the ball.”

The Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the third on a two-out Jordan Karr triple to drive in Robinson followed by Karr crossing the plate after an Elma error.

Monte completed the 15-run rule victory with five runs in the fourth that included an RBI double by Kylee Wisdom, a run-scoring triple from Addi Potts and a walk-off two-run single from Alisyn Parkin.

Meanwhile, Timmons dominated in the circle. Monte’s junior right-hander was sharp, allowing no hits and just one base runner – a one-out walk to Elma center fielder Aaleigha Weld in the second – while striking out seven to pick up the victory.

“Before the game, I knew we were going to come out and do well,” Timmons said. “We put in a lot of hard work in the weeks coming up. … We really didn’t stop practicing (over Spring Break) and we just really wanted this game.”

“If Riley pitches her game, she’ll make our defense look good all the time,” said Pace, whose team played error-free softball in the win. “We had a group of girls coming in to back Riley up. I was glad to see our defense play well.”

Monte collected 17 hits in the game, led by Parkin (3-4, 4 RBI) and Potts (3-3, 2 R, 3B, RBI), each with three-hit games.

In what is arguably the lone bright spot for Elma (6-3, 2-1), the Eagles defense recorded two outfield-initiated double plays on Tuesday.

Weld ended the bottom of the first with a putout of a Timmons pop fly and fired a strike to Callie Galligan at first to double off Jones.

In the third, Emily Comer made a running catch in right and subsequently double up Potts at first base.

While the loss wasn’t what Elma had hoped for following a long break, head coach Ashley Stancil said she believes her experienced team will bounce back quickly.

“It happens, but I think it’s nice for us to get beat like that. Our girls will never want to feel that way again,” she said. “It’s just one of those days. … This team is not young and I have a lot of faith they will grow from this and it will actually make us better, as weird as that sounds. … They just need to remember that they have to have fun, no matter what the score is.”

The Eagles will have little time to dwell on it as they’ll face Winlock at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Winlock.

Montesano will take on Eatonville at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Eatonville.

Raymond-South Bend scored early and often en route to an 18-1 mercy-rule win over Ocosta in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

RSB added six runs in the third on three errors and a two-run single by Berklee Morley.

Three more Ravens runs crossed the plate in the fourth on a passed ball, an Ava Pine single and a sacrifice fly from Raydynn Morley.

Ashlee Payne earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts over four innings pitched.

“We’ve really been working with our pitchers on being consistent and getting ahead and they did great,” RSB head coach Dakota Brooks said. “We’ve also been working on stringing our hits together, which we did. We have a lot of learning to do, but we’re doing great.”

The Ravens face Ilwaco in a twin bill scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
