Tuesday Prep Roundup: Hat trick helps Monte trounce Hoquiam in soccer

Stanfield scores hat trick to lead Bulldogs past Grizzlies

GIRLS SOCCER

Bulldogs 6, Grizzlies 0

Samantha Stanfield recorded the hat trick as Montesano blanked Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League contest Tuesday night at Olympic Stadium.

Two of Stanfield’s goals came on penalty kicks. She converted the first in the 35th minute to give the Bulldogs (3-0, 8-1-1) a 3-0 halftime lead.

After Stanfield scored again in the opening minute of the second half, Montesano was awarded another penalty kick. Goalkeeper Jade Cox blocked Peyton Poler’s attempt, but Stanfield knocked in the rebound.

Brooke Streeter scored twice and Rachel Ayres once for Montesano. Ayres, who moved up from her outside back position to join in the attack and assisted on Streeter’s second goal, received Monte’s Player of the Match award.

The Bulldogs dominated time of possession.

“We were imposing a lot of things on them,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said. “Hoquiam had trouble picking up so many players going forward.”

Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann acknowledged that his team’s game plan was to remain in a defensive posture.

“We missed a couple of defensive assignments and gave up two silly fouls inside the box,” he said.

Hoquiam’s Kayla Delahanty and Sadie Carlyle were cited for fine performances.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs host Forks while Hoquiam (1-1, 2-6-1) travels to Elma.

Eagles 4, Beavers 3

TENINO — Doing all its scoring in the first 41 minutes, Elma withstood a Tenino rally for an Evergreen 1A League victory on Tuesday night at Beaver Stadium.

Kayli Johnson scored in the opening minute of the second half to give the Eagles (1-1, 5-3-2) a 4-1 lead.

Tenino closed the gap with goals in the 43rd and 54th minutes, but Elma was able to blank the Beavers the rest of the way.

Brooke Sutherby scored twice in the first half for the Eagles, the first goal coming off an assist from Molly Johnston. Elma’s Jillian Bieker had opened the scoring in the fourth minute by finding the net on a sharply angled shot.

“We were possessing the ball well,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said. “We had three days after the Montesano match to work on passing and possession and it paid off.”

Johnson, midfielder Emily Newberry and defender Kaya Aiken were cited by Rockey for fine performances.

The Eagles host Hoquiam on Thursday.

T-Birds 4, Bobcats 0

TUMWATER — Scoring twice in each half, Tumwater made better use of its opportunities in downing Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Tuesday at Tumwater Stadium.

While the T-Birds had an advantage in shots on goal, the Bobcats had their share of scoring chances as well. They launched 10 quality shots — four on breakaways— but were unable to convert.

“If there was ever a time when the score didn’t indicate the closeness of the match, it was tonight,” Bobcat coach Larry Fleming said. “We actually played really well for the majority of the match, but can’t seem to play that way for 80 minutes. If we finish a couple of our good looks and play a little smarter on D, then the final score is very close.”

Abbie Bradt and Emmy Walsh up front, Elizabeth Martinez and Brooklyn Lecomte at midfield and Nayeli Morris and Amiah Leach on defense were credited by Fleming with strong matches.

The Bobcats were unable to field a JV team due to injuries and illness.

Aberdeen (0-4, 1-6-2) host Centralia on Thursday.

T-Birds beat Bobcats

Reigning state champion Tumwater overwhelmed Aberdeen, 25-5, 25-11, 25-9, in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Tuesday at Sam Benn Gym.

Particularly considering the scores, Aberdeen coach Doug Basler was surprisingly upbeat afterward.

“In some respects, it was one of our best matches,” he said. “The girls weren’t quite as intimidated as I thought they would be playing Tumwater. We were passing really well and moving on defense really well. We kept quite a few rallies going that obviously didn’t go our way. I think it was a confidence booster for the girls, in that they competed well and didn’t give up.”

Aberdeen’s Malynda Winston was credited with outstanding defense.

Tumwater also won the JV and C squad matches.

The Bobcats (0-, 0-7) host Tenino in a non-leaguer Wednesday.

Hyaks win in three

OYEHUT — Mimi Johnson served 12 consecutive points in the second set as North Beach notched its first victory by topping Chief Leschi, 25-11, 25-14, 25-7, in a Pacific League match Tuesday at Oyehut.

North Beach coach Sharayah Miller said Johnson’s serving streak, which lifted the Hyaks from a deficit in the set, was critical to the outcome.

Caela McGehee delivered five kills and 13 assists and Mariah Vogler six kills and five tip kills for the Hyaks (1-1, 1-6).

The Hyaks travel to Willapa Valley on Thursday.

Wildcats in three

ILWACO — Ocosta used a variety of weapons to beat Ilwaco, 25-11, 25-16, 25-21, in a Pacific League contest Tuesday at Ilwaco.

Snider had 12 kills, Marsh 13 digs and Lillyan Barnum 10 digs for the Wildcats (2-0, 7-1).

“We missed some serves we shouldn’t have in the third game. But in the first two, we served very well and we passed well, too,” Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus said.

The Wildcats won the JV match, 25-13, 25-12. The C squads split two sets.

Ocosta hosts Northwest Christian on Thursday in a varsity-only match scheduled for 6 p.m.

“I thought we played pretty well in the first and third games,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass asserted. “We actually played pretty well in the second half of the second game (too), but we couldn’t get past their blocks.”

Hallee Layman and Olivia Betrozoff put down six kills apiece for the Vikings (0-2, 4-4).

Grace Hodel had seven digs and Sidney Pollard delivered three aces in a 100 percent serving night.

The Vikings won the JV match, 25-17, 25-23.

Indians fall in four

LACEY — Northwest Christian stayed on the attack for most of the match in beating South Bend, 25-14, 25-8, 18-25, 25-19, in Pacific League play Tuesday at Lacey.

“With the exception of a few passing errors, our serve-receive execution was outstanding,” South Bend coach Tricia Needham said. “We simply were never able to get our offense rolling.’

South Bend senior Katelyn Doyle sat out most of the first two sets after being struck in the eye by a ball during pre-match warm-ups. She returned to serve five aces in the third set alone.

Alise Rohr, who filled in for Doyle in the first 1 1/2 sets, and libero Joshlynne Johnson were also commended for fine play.
