Thursday track roundup: Elma boys and girls win at Tenino

Elma sweeps meet

TENINO — Led by its depth through the events, Elma registered a sweep of this three-team Evergreen 1A League dual meet at Tenino on Thursday.

The Eagles edged out host Tenino, 84-75, in the boys meet. In the girls meet, Elma rolled to 143 points to more than double up Tenino and Forks.

Jillian Bieker led Elma with wins in the hurdles, the long jump and in the 4x200m relay, with the Eagles flying away with all three relay races. Holli Ray added two wins in the field, taking the shot put and javelin events.

Ira Hartford swept the 100-200 sprints and the Eagles ran away with the relays in the boys meet. Hartford was in the 4x100m sprint relay, with Brandon Butcher (400m and 4×100 relay) and Jadyn Edenstrom (300 hurdles and 4×400 relay) finishing with two wins each.

Ocosta meet

WESTPORT — North Beach handily won the boys meet and established a girls school record during a multi-school meet hosted by Ocosta on Thursday.

The Hyaks amassed 168 points to beat runner-up South Bend by 69 points. Northwest Christian outscored North Beach, 148-111, in the girls meet.

North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship cleared 10 feet to set a school record in the girls pole vault. She is currently top-ranked in the state among girls 2B vaulters.

Seth Bridge was a double winner in the shot put and discus for North Beach’s boys. The Hyaks swept the top five places in the discus and top four in the shot.

North Beach’s Rodney Washington took the boys high jump and went 37-2 in his triple jumping debut.

Washington was also a member of a pair of winning relay teams, that also included Patrick Day-Heyd, Tavo Muro and Miguel Eastman.

Natasha Fruh doubled in the girls shot and discus for North Beach’s girls.

Blankenship also won the girls long jump and joined Reilly Moore, Mariah Vogler and Lorin Cox on a sprint relay team whose winning time of 54.18 is one of the top five statewide in its classification.

“The kids were really happy not to see any rain and some good performances came out of it,” Hyak coach Peter Fry said.

South Bend’s boys showed particularly well in the sprints. A.J. Sanchez was a double winner in the boys 100 and long jump.

Ocosta’s Matthew Hart won the boys pole vault (11-6) and javelin (152-6), with season-best marks.

Wildcat coach Aaron Anderson also praised personal-best performances from Danny Lennon and Kennedy Merino. Kathryn Anderson made her season debut after recovering from a pulled quadricep and ran a respectable second in the girls 1,600.

Wishkah fielded a pole vaulter for the first time in coach Bob Eager’s long career, with Duncan Palmgren placing fourth. Eager also cited the showing of Brooke Haskey in the girls sprints.

“I think every one of our kids PRd in at least one event,” Eager noted.

Naselle Pacific League Meet

NASELLE — Led by three-event winners Jace Duckworth and Marcus Anderson, Raymond won the boys team competition at a Pacific 2B League meet held at Naselle on Thursday.

The Seagulls scored 184 1/2 points as a team to top Ilwaco by 15 1/2 points. Raymond finished third on the girls side with 95 points, just three ahead of rival Willapa Valley. Ilwaco won the girls team title with 156 points.

“We had some fairly decent weather so we had some PRs,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “Overall, I was really happy with how the kids came out and performed. You have to like when you have a lot of kids contribute.”

Duckworth topped the field in the 100, 200 and pole vault, while Anderson won the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Sean Sath rounded out the Gulls individual champions on the boys side with a victory in the 110 hurdles.

On the girls side, Raymond’s Karlee Freeman continued her dominance in the discus with a throw of 141-10 and also won the javelin. Mikayla Collins was the only other Gull to win an even on the girls side with a personal best time of 2:48.19 in the 800.

Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese came away with individual wins in the 100 hurdles and the pole vault, while her teammate Hannah Cook won the 300 hurdles.

The Vikings lone win on the boys side came from Peter Hamilton in the shot put.

“The weather was a little better,” Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said. “It still was a little cold, but I will take it. I’m happy with how the kids did.”

Taholah’s Levi Jackson topped the field in the javelin for the Chitwhins only victory on the day.
