Elma grad wins wrestling world title

Elma High School graduate Kevin Pine won the Veteran Freestyle World Championship title on Saturday in Skopje, Macedonia.

Pine, a seven-time medalist, won the first gold of his career with a narrow 1-0 decision over Hungary’s Gyozo Lakatos in the D Division 88 kilogram final.

Earlier in the day, he defeated Armenia’s Azat Sheroyan with a 5-1 decision in a first-round matchup. He then recorded consecutive technical falls over Turkey’s Ayhan Ozdemir and United States teammate Petros Petrosyan to advance to the finals.

“I’ve pictured this moment for quite a few years,” Pine was quoted as saying in a TeamUSA.org report. “I kept saying all day that I wanted to hear our national anthem played in this arena with me on top of the podium.”

Clubbers eliminated in World tourney after five games

The Aro Glass Clubbers softball team was eliminated after competing in five games of the World Tournament in Las Vegas this past weekend.

After winning its first two games, the Clubbers lost all three of their final tournament games by one run apiece.

“We were playing well. Everyone through the lineup was hitting. We just didn’t make the outs,” the Clubbers’ Wayne Ross said. “I though we had a good chance to place high in the tournament. It just didn’t happen.”

Ross led the senior-level team with a perfect .1000 batting average for the tournament, including three home runs, seven doubles and 22 RBIs.

Don Mehlhoff batted .824 with 13 RBIs for the tournament while John Delia also hit .824 with six doubles, two dingers and 11 RBIs for the Clubbers.

The Clubbers’ Mike Hatley hit .650 for the tournament.

The Grays Harbor-based team will be competing at the Huntsman Senior Games in St. George, Utah on Oct. 8-12.
