Saturday Prep Roundup: Fourth quarter struggles lead to Elma loss

A young Elma still looking for its first win of the season played competitive basketball for three quarters in a 47-30 loss to Tenino on Saturday in Tenino.

The Eagles (0-7 overall, 0-6 2A Evergreen) held a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks in large part due to seven points from Jacki DeMoss and a defense that held Tenino to 3-of-16 shooting (14%).

Elma trailed 19-18 at the half were down just four points at 31-27 entering the fourth quarter as the Eagles’ Janessa Sample six of her eight points in the game in the frame to keep it close.

But Tenino (6-2, 5-1) dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Elma 16-3 in the period as the Eagles went 0-for-11 from the field over the final eight minutes of the game.

Elma shot 11-of-42 (26%) from the field and 8-of-17 (47%) from the free-throw line.

DeMoss led the Eagles with nine points with Sample and Ella Moore adding eight points each.

The Beavers were led by their standout center Ashley Schow, who scored a game-high 27 points — 19 of those in the second half — as Tenino shot 19-of-52 (37%) as a team against an improving Elma defense.

King’s Way Christian 46, Montesano 41

Montesano’s comeback attempt fell short in a 46-41 non-league loss to King’s Way Christian on Saturday in Vancouver.

Playing in their fourth game in five days, the Bulldogs (7-2 overall, 5-1 1A Evergreen) fell behind by as much as nine points in the first half and before cutting the lead to within a basket in the fourth quarter.

“We kept battling and coming at them,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We had some good chances late in the game, but we couldn’t buy a bucket in the fourth quarter.”

Montesano was led by Zoee Lisherness, who had a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

Paige Lisherness scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with Maia Young and Cassadie Golding adding six points apiece for Montesano.

Monte outrebounded KWC 38-26 with Zoee Lisherness and Mikalya Stanfield (9 reb., 3 stl.) leading the way on the glass.

Ilwaco 86, Raymond 72

Raymond allowed more than fifty points in the first half as Ilwaco handed the Seagulls their sixth straight loss to start the season 86-72 on Saturday in Ilwaco.

Raymond (0-6 overall, 2B Pacific) gave up 53 points in the first half to Ilwaco (5-1) and faced a 17-point deficit at the end of the first quarter.

“Ilwaco is a solid offensive team and we simply gave up too many points,” Raymond head coach Derek Rask said. “Giving up 34 in the first quarter put us in a pretty big hole early on.”

Raymond settled in to play a much more competitive brand of basketball in the second half, outscoring Ilwaco 27-18 in the fourth quarter to cut the Ilwaco lead to 11 at one point before eventually falling by 14.

“In the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, our team really stepped up the effort on both ends of the floor,” Rask said. “We have been really struggling this season and I thought we broke through a bit with our effort and intensity. … I was proud of the fight we put up.”

Morgan Anderson had a breakout game for Raymond, scoring 38 points to go along with six rebounds.

Adrian Quintana finished in double figures with 12 points and Deleak Hubbard was cited by Rask for playing a “great game defensively,” garnering six steals in the contest.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen 85, Mark Morris 62, Hoquiam 13, R.A. Long 7

Winning six events, Aberdeen registered a solid win over district foe Mark Morris in a District IV 2A boys swimming dual meet on Saturday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

The Bobcats pulled away from the Monarchs in a tightly contested meet 85-62 while Hoquiam took third in a matchup win over R.A. Long 13-7.

“This was a great day to be a Bobcat and a Grizzly,” AHS-HHS head coach Rob Burns said. “This entire team has worked very hard in this short season. Mark Morris is a great program. To come away with a win today, especially in a hard-fought, competitive meet, is big for this team.”

Junior Colton Burns won two individual events (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle) for Aberdeen and was a part of the 200 free relay with Elijah Olson, Tyler Bates and Russell Bates.

Tyler Bates and Russell Bates matched up with Foster Patterson and Issac Brandt to win the 200 medley relay and had one individual win each.

Hoquiam sophomore Zach Parker and junior Tommy Wallace — the entire bulk of the Grizzlies’ team — came away with one individual win each. Parker won the 100 fly while Wallace won the 100 breast.

Coach Burns cited Jamieson Berney, Marcus Paniagua, Logen Seguin and Noah Johnson for their performances.

On Thursday, Aberdeen and Hoquiam will host Shelton at 3:30 p.m. at the YMCA of Grays Harbor in the final dual meet of the season.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Lower Columbia 8, Grays Harbor 0

Grays Harbor dropped the first game of a doubleheader against one of the top teams in the NWAC, Lower Columbia, 8-0 in five innings on Saturday in Aberdeen.

The Chokers (4-16 overall, 3-14 NWAC West) opened its final weekend of the regular season by allowing two runs in each of the first two innings against the undefeated Red Devils (20-0, 19-0 NWAC West).

Lower Columbia added four runs in the top of the fourth to round out the scoring.

The Red Devils were led by Pe Ell-Willapa Valley product Katelyn McGough, who is in the top 10 in the NWAC in multiple offensive categories and sits third in the NWAC in home runs (11). McGough went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBI.

Grays Harbor collected four hits in the game, with Elma products Kassedy Olson (1-2) and Destry Dineen (1-2) each picking up a base hit.

The heavy-hitting Red Devils hammered Grays Harbor for 10 runs in the first three innings to hand the Chokers a 16-1 loss in the night cap of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Bishop Sports Complex in Aberdeen.

Lower Columbia scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings sandwiched around a six-run second.

Saydie Harris (4-4, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, 6 RBI) and Kinzey Williams (4-4, 3B, 4R, RBI) led Lower Columbia’s offense.

Grays Harbor managed three hits in the game with Mikaila Neilson (1-3), Sha’kayla Harris (1-2, RBI) and Shaylee Bisbee (1-2) collecting a hit apiece in the game.
