Raymond’s Karlee Freeman now No. 1 in nation with personal-record throw at Chealis Activators meet

USC-bound senior breaks own school record with discus toss of 173 feet, three inches

CHEHALIS— Raymond’s Karlee Freeman launched a record-setting discus throw as part of her three victories at the Chehalis Activators meet last weekend.

Freeman uncorked a career-best throw of 173-3 in the girls discus Saturday to not only break her own school record but take over the national high school lead in that event. She beat runner-up Celisha Ralston of Taholah by nearly 60 feet.

“She’s been on the verge of popping a big throw, so it was good to see her get one,” Raymond head track coach Mike Tully said regarding Freeman’s career-best toss.

The USC-bound Raymond senior also won the javelin with a career-best of 130-1 and the shot at 41-2.

Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor was a double winner Saturday. The AHS senior continued to inch closer to breaking the 50-second barrier in the boys 400, winning the event handily in 50.47. He also took the 200 meters in 22.56.

Raymond’s boys also enjoyed an excellent meet with a pair of field-event victories.

Marcus Anderson took the long jump with a leap of 21-2 1/2 — a significant personal best. Raymond’s Ricky Robinett and North Beach’s Ben Poplin tied in the shot put at 46-10 1/2, with Robinett awarded the victory on the basis of a better second throw.

Notable among the runners-up was Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas. The University of San Francisco-bound senior sprinter was second in both the girls 200 and 400 meters (and was third in the 100).

Raymond was fourth and Aberdeen tied for fifth in the boys team competition, won by Chehalis. The Bobcats were fifth in the girls team race, won by Maple Ridge.

“I’m very happy with the way the kids competed coming off spring break,” Tully said. “Hopefully, we can keep that momentum going.”

Several Twin Harborites fared well in Friday’s invitational competition, contested among non-qualifiers for Saturday’s Activitators Classic.

Harbor winners Friday included Wishkah’s Joey Brenneman in the boys 300 hurdles (45.86), Raymond’s Casey Carter in the boys pole vault (10 feet), Aberdeen’s Nicholas Davis in the boys long jump (18-6), North Beach’s boys 4×100 relay team (48.91), Elma’s Jayla Mason in the girls 200 meters (28.34), Hoquiam’s Valerie Roloff in the girls 800 meters (2:43.88) and Hoquiam’s Elizabeth Folkers in the girls 100 hurdles (17.77) and North River’s Eliza Gumaelius in the girls 3,200 (14:41.53).
