Raymond has solid start with a 68-50 win over Onalaska

Raymond got its 2022-23 campaign off to a solid start with a 68-50 win over Onalaska on Tuesday in Raymond.

The Seagulls (1-0) turned what was a slim 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 33-19 halftime lead after Raymond guard Skyler Hutson got red-hot, drilling three 3-pointers in the frame.

Hutson hit two more three’s in the third quarter — going 5-for-7 in the game — to help the Gulls extend their lead to 53-34 at the end of the third quarter to help secure the win.

Raymond was paced by senior Morgan Anderson, who scored a game-high 24 points, 10 of those coming in the first quarter.

“Morgan had an outstanding game and showed why he is the leader of our team,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “I was really happy with our effort and execution for our first game of the season. It wasn’t always pretty, but we shot the ball well and played well defensively. With both teams coming off of state football quarterfinals games, there were definitely some guys that were a little leg weary by the end. It was a good way to start the season and hopefully we can build on the things we did well and work on the things that we didn’t do well.”

Hutson finished with 15 points while Talan Yearout (7 points), Kai Huey (6 pts.), Daniel Medeiros (6 pts.) and Iyven Perez (5 pts.) each had multiple buckets for the Seagulls.

Raymond will have a short turnaround as it faces Tenino at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Tenino.
