PREP VOLLEYBALL

King’s Way Christian 3, Montesano 1

Montesano missed a chance at securing a state-playoff berth with a 3-1 loss to King’s Way Christian in a 1A District 4 semifinal game on Wednesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (11-7 overall) lost by scores of 25-21, 25-10, 20-25 and 25-13 to the Trico League No. 2 seeded Knights (14-4).

Monte – the top seed out of the 1A Evergreen League – took the early lead in the first set before the wheels fell off. KWC went on a run to tie the game at 9-all and eventually took a 23-16 lead.

After the first-set loss, Monte continued to struggle, falling behind 12-4 and 19-5 after two long Knights service streaks in Game 2.

“We came out with tons of energy and got out to a quick lead 8-3, then all of a sudden the energy just drained out of us,” Montesano head coach Cindy Wecker said. “After going five sets with Castle Rock (earlier in the evening), unfortunately, we looked like we ran out of gas.”

The Bulldogs mustered up enough energy to stay close in the third set, taking an early lead and rallying to tie KWC at 19-all with three straight points.

Monte took a 20-19 lead on a kill by outside hitter Kaila Hatton and took a 23-20 lead on a putback kill by setter Karissa Otterstetter. The Bulldogs took the set 25-20 on a Knights shot that sailed past the end line.

But that was as close as Monte would get as the Knights opened up a 5-0 lead and – after another long service streak – took a 16-9 lead en route to the 25-13 win.

“King’s Way had some really good hitters and blockers so we struggled to get our offense going, as well as our defense. Without the blockers getting a hand on the ball it is tough to defend hitters like King’s Way has,” Wecker said. “Our passing struggled tonight too. King’s way had some great servers and we had a hart time getting a good pass up.”

Montesano will face Hoquaim in an elimination game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at King’s Way Christian High School in Vancouver.

The winner will advance to the consolation final with a chance at a state-tournament berth at stake.

“Even though we did not get the win, these girls still have a lot of fight left in them,” Wecker said. “We will show up on Saturday and leave it all on the court.”

Montesano 3, Castle Rock 2

Montesano rallied to beat Castle Rock in a 1A District 4 Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday in Montesano.

Monte won via scores of 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-19 and 15-11 over the No. 4 seed Rockets (7-10).

“I was super proud of the girls for showing heart and not giving up,” Wecker said. “Castle Rock runs a really quick low set to all of their hitters, which makes it very difficult to get the block there in time. … I am very pleased with the progress all of the girls have made this season. They have come a long way in just a couple of months.”

Monte libero Bentley Warne had 28 digs while Karissa Otterstetter had a huge game, going 23-for-23 in service with 23 digs, seven kills and a team-best 35 assists.
