Prep Sports Roundup: Hoquiam blanks King’s Way Christian in season-opener

Sadie Carlyle opened the season with a two-goal game to lift Hoquiam soccer past King’s Way Christian 2-0 on Tuesday as we take a look at Tuesday’s action from around the Harbor.

PREP SOCCER

Hoquiam 2, King’s Way Christian 0

Hoquiam’s Sadie Carlyle tallied a pair of second-half goals to upend one of last year’s state title contenders with a 2-0 win over King’s Way Christian on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam and King’s Way Christian went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie but the Grizzlies (1-0) soon changed that with a goal in the 45th minute.

Carlyle broke the scoreless tie after receiving a pass from Taylor Strom who found a streaking Carlyle who put away a close-range shot.

Carlyle struck again in stoppage time when she carried the ball 65 yards through multiple defenders and beat Knights keeper Sara Thudium one-on-one.

Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann said it felt good to see the team’s hard work pay off.

“We worked hard through two-a-days and have put the work in during training session. That hard work and that effort showed on the pitch tonight,” he said. “I’m proud of this team win, we played as one cohesive unit and the final result proved it.”

Aberdeen 2, Elma 1

Aberdeen opened its season with a win on the road as they scored once in each half in a 2-1 defeat of Elma on Tuesday.

Emma Green broke the seal on the game in the 28th minute when she collected a loose ball and fired a shot low to the far post to give the Bobcats (1-0) the lead.

Dominique Trevino scored for the Bobcats early in the second half with a shot from about 20 yards out that got over the head of Eagles keeper Paige Knutson and under the cross bar to give Aberdeen the 2-0 lead

Elma (0-1) got its lone goal around the 60th minute of the second half when Kayli Johnson redirected a corner kick from Jillian Bieker to cut the Aberdeen lead in half.

First-year Elma coach Evan Valentine said he was impressed with how his players responded to his new style of play against a talented opponent.

“Everything is a learning process, it’s a new system and I thought we did well,” he said. “Aberdeen had some really good players and I enjoyed watching them play. We held them to a few a shots and they took advantage.”

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said hustle was the difference in the outcome for his team.

“We had a hard time adjusting to the surface but the girls made up for a lack of control on the grass field by hustling and working hard to win the ball,” he said.

Aberdeen will continue its non-league schedule with a home game against North Thurston at 7 tonight.

Elma will be in action tonight as well with a 7 p.m. road game against Rochester.

Raymond-South Bend 2, Ocosta 1

Raymond-South Bend picked up a goal in the 63rd minute to break the tie and secure the 2-1 victory against Ocosta on Tuesday in Ocosta.

The Riptide (1-0) tallied a goal in the 20th minute and held a 1-0 lead going into halftime despite being outshot by Ocosta (0-1) 7-5.

Katelynn Denny temporarily evened the score in the 48th minute when she dribbled around three defenders and scored with a hard, low shot to the near post.

RSB broke the tie again in the 63rd minute with what proved to be a game-winning goal.

Ocosta’s Devyn Martin made eight saves in her debut at keeper for the Wildcats.

Raymond-South Bend will try for its second win of the season when it hits the road to face Onalaska on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Ocosta will look for its first win of the season at home against Forks at 6 tonight.

Tumwater 3, Montesano 0

The Montesano Bulldogs lost to Tumwater 3-0 on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

Tumwater scored in the 38th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the half.

The T-Birds followed that up with two goals within a 10-minute space in the second half to round out the scoring.

Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez commended Bulldogs goalie Ellie Barbo with “making some really good saves,” but said aside from that not much went well for his team.

“We didn’t have much of an offensive showing. Tumwater was well organized enough to counter and keep the ball longer than we wanted,” he said.

Monte (1-1) plays at WF West at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, WF West 1

Montesano opened its season against a 2A opponent and came away victorious against WF West in Chehalis on Wednesday.

Monte (1-0) won the first match of the season 25-18, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15 with an offensive attack fueled by aggressive play at the net.

Janessa Otterstetter led the team in assists with 13 while freshman McKynnlie Dalan and senior Emma Jensen both contributed eight kills.

Bulldogs head coach Pat Pace said defensive energy helped fuel the offense.

“It was a good first match to get the legs underneath, the girls did a good job moving on the court and covering. We really attacked the ball and we were able to attack more than WF West.”

Pace was also impressed with the play of Myah Gallinger who played her first game as a setter along side Otterstetter.

Monte will host Aberdeen on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Raymond opened the season with a straight-set victory over Hoquiam on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Sidney Swogger led the way for the Seagulls (1-0) with six aces and three kills in the 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 victory.

“We had a good night serving, which kept them on their heels,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said. “Overall, it was a good team performance. We played scrappy and attacked the ball well.”

Tina Sypaphay and Hannah Miller recorded four kills apiece for Raymond.

Hoquiam (0-1) was led by Hailey Lawrence’s 11 digs and Maggie Mazariegos, who tallied 15 assists.

“We’re very young experience-wise,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “We just have to be more prepared and we’ll get back to practice and work on that. I thought Raymond was extremely disciplined and technically a great team, so you have to give them a lot of credit.”

BOYS PREP TENNIS

Aberdeen 4, Shelton 2

Aberdeen dropped two single matches but swept the doubles matches to start its season with a 4-2 win over Shelton at home on Tuesday.

The Bobcats (1-0) Andrew Troeh was the lone winner for Aberdeen in the singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kal El Ruiz.

All three of Aberdeen’s doubles teams were victorious in straight sets.

BOYS PREP GOLF

King Way Christian 192, Hoquiam 205

Hoquiam’s Michael Jump and Noah Sudderth shot two of the lowest score but the Grizzlies were narrowly defeated by King’s Way Christian 192-205 on Tuesday in Vancouver.

Jump was the medalist of the day, shooting a 41 while Suddereth wasn’t too far behind him with a 44.

Isaac and Aide Pisarczyk both tied for the lead for the Knights with identical scores of 46.

Hoquiam will ee off against Aberdeen at 3:30 today at Highlands Golf Course.
