Raymond-South Bend, Hoquiam and Elma’s offenses were on display as we review Thursday’s prep softball games on the Twin Harbors.

Raymond-South Bend 15, Hoquiam 7

Raymond-South Bend’s offense was on full display in a 15-7 win over Hoquiam on Thursday at John Gable Park in Hoquiam.

The Ravens (6-4 overall) found a groove the second time through the lineup to turn a 2-0 deficit entering the third inning into a 12-5 lead by the end of the fifth inning.

The Ravens scored three runs in the top of the third inning kickstarted with a leadoff double by senior shortstop Kyndal Koski and highlighted by RBI singles from sophomore third baseman Kassie Koski and pitcher Ashlee Payne.

From that point on, RSB scored a run in each of the final five innings.

The Ravens scored five in a fourth inning that included an RBI triple from second baseman Berklee Morley and a two-run double by catcher Ava Pine.

RSB extended its lead with four runs in the top of the fifth, with Kassie Koski driving in older sister Kyndal with a single followed later in the inning by another Pine two-run double.

A two-run triple by center fielder Emma Glazier in the sixth put the Ravens up 14-5.

“Our girls came back after a tough loss yesterday (to Pe Ell-Willapa Valley) and competed,” RSB head coach Dakota Fluke said. “It was nice to see the girls playing together and competing today.”

Hoquiam (1-8) got plenty of run-support with seven runs in the game – including home runs by Lexi LaBounty and catcher Faith Prosch – but Grizzly pitchers surrendered 19 base hits in a game that had 28 hits in total.

“They’re hitting the ball,” Hoquiam head coach John Matagora said. “For a bunch of games, were weren’t scoring runs, so at least we are starting to score. We’re just a young team and we’re just trying to score more runs.”

LaBounty, who was pulled from the game due to an ankle injury, belted a two-run shot to right to make it an 8-5 game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Prosch, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles, drilled a full-count pitch over the center-field fence for a two-run homer in the sixth.

Lost in the sauce of the offensive-minded game was the high IQ Raymond-South Bend exhibited on the base paths and with its defense.

The Ravens took every extra-base offered to them with an aggressive style of baserunning while never running into an out. This was best exhibited when Kyndal Koski took a big round off first base after a single to draw a throw, then took off and raced into second safely after the throw came in behind her.

“That was a big thing for us this year just because we were so young last year,” Kassie Koski said of the baserunning. “So we definitely worked on it a lot. It was definitely heads up and smart.”

Depsite having three errors in the game, the Ravens defense made several heady, if not unconventional plays, mostly at third base.

Kassie Koski recorded six putouts at third as the Ravens defense often threw to her to cut down Hoquiam’s lead runner.

The sophomore third baseman also made a diving snag of a Nadine Stewart bunt attempt and ran down Macy Dhooghe trying to score after scooping up a grounder down the third-base line in the fifth.

Glazier was also sharp in center field, running down several line drives to limit Hoquiam’s offensive output.

“We definitely like to play behind our pitcher and just get the simple outs,” Kassie Koski said.

Kassie Koski added the win was “a feel-good day” for the Ravens after getting swept in a 2B Pacific League matchup against a heavy-hitting Pe Ell-Willapa Valley team a day prior.

“It just got us back into it after a hard loss,” she said. “(The win) kind of got our morale together and got us back to where we should be.”

Raymond-South Bend is on Spring Break next week and will be back in action with a double header against Chief Leschi at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

Hoquiam faces Blaine at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Mill Creek Sportsplex in Walla Walla.

Elma 14, Tenino 1

Elma completed a season sweep over Tenino with a 14-1 five-inning victory on Thursday in Elma.

The Eagles (5-1 overall, 3-0 1A Evergreen) broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the bottom of the third with RBI base hits by Emily Comer, Raelynn Weld, Ashlynn Weld, Emmie Spencer and Lynsee Bednarik.

Elma collected eight hits total in the frame.

The Eagles followed that up with eight runs in the fourth, highlighted by run-scoring doubles from Ashlynn Weld, Comer and Monroe to take a 14-1 lead.

That was all Elma reliever Ashlynn Weld would need as the freshman right-hander struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to secure a mercy-rule victory.

Elma starting pitcher Jasmyne Kish earned the win in the circle, allowing no runs or hits with three walks while striking out three in three innings pitched.

Ashlynn Weld allowed an unearned run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts in tossing the final two innings of the game.
