Montesano upsets Hoquiam to advance to 1A State Tournament

Montesano advanced to the 1A State Tournament with a 3-1 win over Hoquiam in the 1A District 4 Tournament on Saturday at King’s Way Christian High School in Vancouver.

Montesano (13-8 overall) defeated Hoquiam (17-2) for the first time in three tries this season 25-15, 25-13, 20-25 and 25-22 to claim third place in the district.

Maia Young led Montesano with 17 kills with Ashlyn Devereaux (9 kills), Kylee Wisdom (7 kills) and Kaila Hatton (6 kills, 3 solo blocks) contributing to Monte’s offensive output.

Monte sophomore setter Karissa Otterstetter had 31 assists for the Bulldogs.

Monte got to the consolation final with a five-set victory over Stevenson earlier in the day.

The Bulldogs beat Stevenson 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25 and 15-8 but suffered a blow when 1A Evergreen First Team all-league middle blocker senior Addie Winter suffered a knee injury and was unable to continue to play the rest of the tournament.

Hoquiam defeated King’s Way Christian 3-2 to reach the district third/fourth-place game.

The reigning 1A Evergreen League champs entered the tournament 15-0 on the season, but lost two of their final three matches to miss the state tournament.

Willapa Valley advances to 1B State Tournament

Willapa Valley won two of three games on Saturday to earn a spot in the 1B State Tournament.

The Vikings (15-7) lost to Mossyrock (18-0) 25-6, 25-11 and 25-15 in the 1B District 4 semifinals at Montesano High School before rebounding with a 25-8, 25-11 and 25-9 over Taholah (7-6), earning a spot in the state tournament in the process.

To cap off a long day, Willapa Valley defeated Columbia Adventist 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21 to place third in the district.

Lauryn McGough (15 kills), Grace Huber (8 kills, 24 digs), Sam Sheary (16 assists) and Ella Petit (22-22 service, 5 aces) led the Vikings in the victory over the Kodiaks (11-7).

“I am so proud of my girls working through that long-day process, staying focused and earning their place at state,” Willapa Valley head coach Karisa Hodel said.

Willapa Valley won its first game of the tournament 25-13, 25-14 and 25-1 over Mary M. Knight on Thursday at Mary M. Knight High School.

Raymond knocked out of state-tourney contention

Raymond’s bid for a second-consecutive state-tournament berth fell short after two losses in the 2B District 4 Tournament on Saturday in Raymond.

Raymond (17-6) lost to Adna 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16 in the consolation semifinals.

Karsyn Freeman (12 kills), Kyndal Koski (21 digs, 11-12 service, 4 assists) and Megan Kongbouakhay (19 assists, 100% service) led the Seagulls in defeat.

Raymond faced Forks in a winner-to-state, loser-out game and lost in straight sets 25-22, 25-12 and 25-20.

“We did some great things but got in our own way too often,” Raymond head coach Julie Jewell said. “We definitely didn’t play at the level we are capable of. It was a frustrating way to end the season.”

Raymond was led by Kassie Koski (12-12 service, 5 kills, 4 blocks, ace) and Kongbouakhay (19 assists, 10 digs).

“Our five seniors — Alia Enlow, Baylee Price, Cadence Swogger, Caton Swogger and Jolie Dunn — ended a very successful high school career. They won 32 straight league games, and in those 32 games they lost seven sets,” Jewell said. “They experienced a lot of success and they will be missed.”
