Prep Roundup: Montesano volleyball beats Rochester in straight sets for first win of season

Montesano’s volleyball team got its first win of the season while Ocosta lost a close three-set match to Rainier as we review Monday’s local prep sports.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, Rochester 0

After opening the season with two losses, the Montesano Bulldogs broke into the win column with a straight-set victory over Rochester on Monday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (1-2 overall) played well from the service line and cleaned up the mistakes, leading to the victory.

Monte won 25-5, 25-20 and 25-19.

Liv Robinson, Karissa Otterstetter and Kylee Wisdom went a combined 53-for-53 from the service line for the Bulldogs.

“We played pretty good as a whole,” Monte head coach Cindy Wecker said. “We had some outstanding servers tonight.”

Kalia Hatton led the Bulldogs with 11 kills while Robinson (25-25 service, 3 kills, 5 aces, 14 digs) and Otterstetter (21-21 service, 7 kills, 20 assists, 3 aces, 10 digs) “played outstanding all the way around,” according to Wecker.

Montesano takes on Adna at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Adna High School.

Rainier 3, Ocosta 0

Ocosta fought hard but came up short in a straight-set loss to Rainier on Monday at Rainier High School.

The Wildcats (1-1) were in every game, but it was the undefeated Mountaineers (3-0) that made the plays down the stretch, winning 26-24, 25-17 and 25-23.

“We competed well versus a talented Rainier team tonight,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “Although it was a straight-set loss, they were close sets.”

Alexia Bradley had seven blocks (five solo) with Brynn Rasmus recording 17 assists for the Wildcats.

Snider credited Ocosta’s Shae-Lynn Thurston with “excellent back row play.”

Ocosta hosts Raymond-South Bend in a 2B Pacific League matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Westport.

BOYS PREP GOLF

W.F. West 266, Montesano 268, Shelton 281

Led by Colton Grubb’s low round of the day, Montesano placed second in a three-way match against W.F. West and Shelton on Monday at the Alderbrook Golf Club in Union.

Montesano shot a 268, two strokes behind the Bearcats and 13 strokes better than the Highclimbers.

Grubb shot a 42 for his 9-hole round to earn Medalist honors.

The Bulldogs’ Gavin Root (54), Ayden Sauer (55), Caden Grubb (55) and Spencer Lovell (63) rounded out Monte’s top five scorers.

Montesano takes on Elma at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grays Harbor Country Club.
