Montesano 5, Rochester 4

Montesano clawed back from four runs down to earn a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Rochester on Tuesday at Vessey Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (1-1 overall) got a solid effort from its pitching staff as starter Caden Grubb and relievers Skylar Bove and Bode Poler combined to allow just three hits to the Warriors (1-1), but Montesano errors led to a 4-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs offense came alive in the fifth to break the shutout.

With two on and no outs in the frame, Tucker Eaton drew a walk and advanced to third on a double by Toren Crites.

After Zach Timmons walked to load the bases, Caden Grubb drove in a run with an infield single.

Poler then doubled to left, clearing the bases to tie the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied well into extra innings as both pitching staffs shut down opposing offenses.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the ninth that Rochester – which had just one error at that point – made a crucial mistake.

Tyson Perry then hit a ground ball to Rochester shortstop Tate Quarnstrom, who botched the play, allowing Morris to score the walk-off winner.

Poler earned the victory, allowing no baserunners in a clean two innings of relief work.

Caden Grubb started for the Bulldogs and allowed one earned run on a hit and three walks with four strikeouts in 3 1-3 innings pitched.
