Two quick goals help Grizzlies edge Rockets, 3-1

HOQUIAM — Two goals in quick succession from Taylor Strom and Sadie Carlyle helped Hoquiam pull away in the first half as the Grizzlies down Castle Rock 3-1.

Hoquiam (2-1 overall) scored in the 13th minute when Carlyle was fouled by the goalkeeper, drawing a penalty. Taylor Strom buried the penalty-kick attempt with a low shot to the right of the keeper to give Hoquiam a 1-0 lead.

Hoquiam struck again two minutes later when Carlyle found the net with Abbi Spradlin providing the assist. Sadie received Spradlin’s pass at the top of the 18-yard box, beat two defenders and slipped the ball to the back post for the Grizzlies’ second goal.

Maya Jump benefited from another Spradlin assist when she finished a cross into the box in the 55th minute for a 3-0 lead.

Castle Rock (2-1 overall) got their lone goal in the 79th minute on a penalty kick.

Aberdeen got a big second half goal from Rylie Knodel to secure the 2-1 road victory against River Ridge (0-4) on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats (1-2) gave up a goal in the 10th minute when Aberdeen keeper Charlize Gutierrez mishandled a loose ball that allowed River Ridge to take a 1-0 lead.

Rylee Knodel gave Aberdeen the lead in the 50th minute when she hustled to intercept a pass intended for the Hawk’s goalkeeper and shot it into an open net.

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said the victory should have been more decisive with the Bobcats out shooting the Hawks 12-2.

“We didn’t control the ball very well and we should have better possession,” he said. “We probably should have scored a few more goals but I’m glad we came away with the win.”
