HOQUIAM — Holding on to a slim one-run lead late in the game, the Hoquiam Grizzlies surrendered the tying run in the sixth and three runs in extra innings to fall to White Salmon 6-3 in a 1A District first-round playoff game on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.
The Grizzlies were trying to protect a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning but gave up the tying run when defensive mistakes erased their slim lead.
Hoquiam’s defense struggled to make plays again in the top of eighth when fielding errors allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.
Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said his team had a hard time collecting itself after losing its lead in the sixth.
“We play the ‘uh-oh’ game rather than the ‘we’re not done’ game,” he said. “I wish I could say that we battled back in those extra innings but sometimes we play a little tight and hesitant.”
Starting pitcher Walker Dunn pitched five innings and surrendered two earned runs in his no-decision performance.
Hoquiam (12-5) will face Elma at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in an elimination game.

Black Hills trumps Aberdeen
CENTRAL PARK — In a battle of the two top teams in the 2A Evergreen League, a deep Black Hills roster proved to be too much for Aberdeen to overcome as the Wolves defeated the Bobcats 91-54 at Grays Harbor Country Club on Monday.
Using the Stableford scoring system, Black Hills benefited from double-digit scoring rounds from five of its six golfers to remain undefeated on the season at 10-0, 9-0 in league play.
“Now you can see why Black Hills is the best team in the league.” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “They were missing their number one and number three golfer and still shot a 91. It is our goal to get back to that level.”
Aberdeen’s MacKayla Waltee was the top scorer of the meet, carding 27 points to edge Black Hills’ Elle Hirotaka by one point.
“MacKayla is really comfortable with her game right now,” Sundstrom said. “It is a great time to feel that way because Districts are next week.”
Aberdeen (7-3, 6-3) remains in the league’s second spot and will turn its sights to the 2A District IV Tournament at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16 in Washougal.
