Prep Roundup: Aberdeen finds the back of the net in win over Black Hills

Aberdeen had no troubles finding the back of the net in picking up a key league victory as we review Tuesday’s prep sports on the Harbor.

BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 7, Black Hills 1

Aberdeen found the finishing touch in a 7-1 win over Black Hills on Tuesday in Tumwater.

The Bobcats (5-6 overall, 4-4 2A Evergreen) scored seven goals – five in the second half – in earning an important 2A Evergreen Conference game over the Wolves (2-9, 2-7).

The Bobcats scored earn when center midfielder Leo Garcia converted a penalty kick in the 4th minute.

After a Wolves goal on a corner kick-header play in the 12th minute, the Bobcats regained the lead a minute later when junior forward Evan Cone scored off a rebound of a Garcia shot.

After the halftime break, Aberdeen wasted little time putting the game out of reach.

Senior midfielder Juan Serrano fed Torres on a give-and-go play for a goal in the 45th minute followed by Serrano scoring of an assist from senior winger Ruben Oropeza just two minutes later.

Torres scored off a feed from defender Javier Lagunas, senior forward Camden Friberg scored on an assist from Torres in the 66th minute for a 6-1 lead.

Torres closed out the scoring by taking a pass from senior midfielder Freddy Hernandez, beating two defenders and slotting a shot inside the near post in the 68th minute.

”The boys have been putting in a lot of effort in practice and they have been focusing on toughness and finishing,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming, who cited the play of Serrano, Gilbran Garcia, Leo Garcia, Torres, Cone and Chris Garcia. “Tonight, they really put it together and showed what they can do when they are on top of their game.”

Aberdeen sits in fourth place in the conference standings, one game up on Rochester.

The Bobcats face the Warriors at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rochester High School.

The Aberdeen junior varsity team (8-0-1) won 5-0.

Edgar Ceja, Trino Villar, Oscar Leiva, Ethan Parris and Angel Corona scored a goal apiece for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen won two of three singles matches but lost 4-2 to W.F. West on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats got wins from sisters Kallie and Sophie Knutson to lead 2-1 in singles matches.

But the Bobcats were swept in all three doubles matches to suffer the loss.

Aberdeen faces W.F. West at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday in Chehalis.
