Montesano 6, Hoquiam 0

Montesano pitcher Skylar Bove took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a 6-0 win over Hoquiam on Senior Night at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Typically Montesano’s top reliever and closer during his prep career, Bove – a senior right-hander – got the starting nod on Tuesday and dazzled, allowing just three walks without a hit while striking out five through six scoreless innings.

Monte (14-2 overall, 8-1 1A Evergreen) took a 2-0 lead on a Tyce Peterson RBI ground out followed by a Tyler Johansen run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bulldogs took advantage of Hoquiam mistakes in the the second, scoring three runs on two errors for a 5-0 lead.

Bove retired the first 10 Grizzlies he faced before losing a perfect game with a walk to Zander Jump with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

He worked out of a one-out, two-on jam in the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat, and struck out Hoquiam pitcher Joey Bozich with two on and two outs to end the sixth.

“He was awesome today,” Monte head coach Mike Osgood said. “The plan was for him to go 4-5 innings and let (Montesano pitcher) John (Griffin) come in there and get some innings for Senior Night. But you can’t take a kid out who is throwing a no-hitter. … He loves to go out there and battle.”

Hoquiam’s Chase Shumate ended the no-hit bid by stroking a 2-1 pitch into left field to lead off the seventh.

“He deserved it,” Bove said of Shumate’s hit. “I threw him a low fastball and he got to it.”

That was all for Bove, who threw 50 strikes out of 76 total pitches (66%).

“I’ve never thrown a no-hitter,” Bove said. “To do it on this night would have been really special, but I’m happy we came out of here with a W. We didn’t play our best game.”

John Griffin replaced Bove and retired the side in the seventh, striking out two batters to secure the Monte win.

Montesano managed just six hits in the game as Grizzlies starter Joey Bozich held the Bulldogs scoreless after the second inning until a run on a Tucker Eaton RBI double in the sixth.

“Our offense was lacking and there was no energy today,” Bove said. “We didn’t bring it today and we thought we could walk through this game, which we obviously couldn’t. We had to battle and we have a lot to learn.”

Bove said the Bulldogs came in a bit overconfident after outscoring Hoquiam 32-1 in sweeping a double header back on March 23 and credited Bozich’s pitching with keeping the game close.

“We beat these guys pretty bad last time and we tried to walk in and just take it. We have to come in with a lot more intensity,” Bove said. “Joey had a great day today, I’ll give him that. He put a really good performance on and I’m really proud of him because he’s young and he did really good. I’m just happy we came out with the W.”

Hoquiam (3-12, 1-10) plays at Forks in a double header at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Monte will take on Tenino in a double header at noon on Saturday in Tenino.

If Monte wins both games, the Bulldogs will be in the driver’s seat for a league title.
