All-County pole vaults

MONTESANO – North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship broke her own meet record in winning the girls pole vault that concluded the Ray Ryan Memorial All-County Championships on Monday at Montesano.

The bulk of the meet was contested Saturday in Aberdeen. The boys and girls pole vaults, originally scheduled for Friday in Hoquiam, were postponed to Monday (and moved to Montesano) due to inclement weather.

Blankenship cleared 11 feet to crack the meet record of 10-6 she set last year. She is the reigning state 2B champion in the event.

Brendan Chaney completed a North Beach sweep of the vault by winning the boys event at 12 feet.

Aberdeen’s boys and Elma’s girls easily captured team titles. The Bobcats, with 155 points, finished 46 ahead of runner-up Montesano. North Beach was third with 105.

Elma’s girls amassed 168 points. Aberdeen was second with 106 and North Beach third with 72. Pole vault results:

Boys — 12-0 — Chaney (NB), Bailey (Ocosta), Armbruster (NB), Richards (NB), Hollatz (Monte), tie between Butler (NB) and Adams (Monte). Girls — 11-0 — Blankenship (NB), Desamours (NB).

BOYS SOCCER

Spartans 4, Grizzlies 2

FORKS — Scoring four unanswered goals in the second half, Forks remained unbeaten in Evergreen 1A League play by downing Hoquiam on Monday night at Spartan Stadium.

Goals by Connor Darras and Jose Juarez gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 halftime lead. Darras converted a penalty kick after Carlos Juarez was taken down in the box. Jose Juarez put in a crossing pass from Darras.

The Spartans, however, dominated play after the break.

“Our defense got out of position,” Grizzly assistant Carlos Hermengildo said. “All four goals were pretty much one-on-one against the keeper.”

Darras and Naz Mazariegos were cited for fine performances.

The Grizzlies (1-1, 6-2) travel to King’s Way Christian on Thursday.
