After one day at the 1A State Girls Golf Championships at the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis, two local golfers are atop the leaderboard and primed for a state title.
Montesano’s Hailey Blancas and Elma’s Olivia Moore are in the lead separated by just two strokes heading into Wednesday’s final round.
Blancas – who roared back on the second day of last season’s state tournament to place second – shot an 82 over 18 holes to hold a two-stroke lead over Moore – the current District 4 champion – who shot an 84.
The two East County golfers are clear of the rest of the field by five strokes as Forest Ridge’s Lulu Gaul Vargas sits in third with a first-round score of 89.
Elma’s Sophia Hamilton sits in 15th with a score of 102 with Hoquiam’s Eva Jump sitting tied for 30th with a 113.
In the 1A State Boys Golf Championship, Elma’s Grant Vessey is top among local golfers with a 93 to sit in a tie for 40th place.
Hoquiam’s Mick Bozich (95, 44th-tie), Elma’s Traden Carter (99, 51-t) and Montesano’s Josh Wills – who will be competing for the Bulldogs baseball team in the state semifinals on Friday – sits in 57th place with a round of 108.
In the 2A State Girls Golf Championship, Aberdeen’s Britt Rajcich shot an 86 to sit in a three-way tie for 15th after one round at the MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.
Bobcats Saylor Heikkila (92, 26th-t) and Kaitlyn McCracken (111, 70th) also competed for Aberdeen on Tuesday.
In the 2A State Boys Golf Championship, Aberdeen’s Charlie Ancich sits in a tie for 58th with a round of 88.
The 1A/2A State Golf Championships meets conclude on Wednesday.
