Vikings beat young Acorns team 61-4

Willapa Valley advanced to the semifinal round of the 1B District 4 Tournament in girls basketball with a 61-4 victory over Oakville on Monday, Feb. 14, in Menlo.

The Vikings (11-8 overall) held a definitive experience advantage over the youthful Acorns (7-14) with four senior starters. Oakville’s starting five included a sophomore, three freshmen and a seventh grader.

Willapa Valley took control from the start, holding a 27-2 advantage by the end of the first quarter and outscoring Oakville 12-0 in the second quarter.

Willapa Valley outscored Oakville 22-2 in the second half.

“We talked all week during practice about coming out and being mentally ready to go,” said Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson, whose team had not played a game in 10 days. “We played a really good first quarter. … I give (Oakville’s) kids credit. They never put their head down and they worked hard. … Our kids came out and did a good job, shared the ball and did a nice job, especially defensively.”

Senior Lanissa Amacher had 16 points and three steals for Willapa Valley, which shot 44 percent as a team on 27-of-62 shooting from the field and had 11 players score in the game.

Vikings senior Chayse Coady scored 11 points and led Willapa Valley with five assists, while junior guard Brooklyn Patrick scored eight points and had three assists.

Willapa Valley advances to the district semifinals with the victory and will face Taholah at 6 p.m. Wednesday for a spot in the district-title game on Saturday.
