Raymond rolls in three

RAYMOND — On Senior Night, Raymond fielded its normal senior-laden starting lineup and found a high gear for the postseason in a 25-7, 25-17, 25-7 Pacific 2B League win over Ocosta on Monday.

“On Senior Night, all six starters controlled their emotions really well and played hard,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said. “We only missed three serves all night and had 13 aces as a team.”

Eight of those service aces came from senior Hailee Smith, who also added 12 kills, 14 digs and two solo blocks. Mikayla Collins added 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, with Aubree Gardner seven kills and 14 digs and Winter Newman two aces. Cydney Flemetis was cited for her hustle and Kendra Dunsmoor was the sixth senior honored.

Ocosta head coach Barb Rasmus cited three players who finished with 100 percent serving — Emily Snider, Emily Arndt and Evalyn Marsh. Rasmus also cited Erica Snyder for her passing and setting. Snyder also finished with seven digs.

Raymond won the junior varsity match, 25-19, 25-16.

Today, Raymond (5-1, 10-2) hosts Ilwaco in a storm makeup match. On Wednesday, Ocosta (4-3, 9-4) finishes the regular season at home against Life Christian Academy.

MENLO — Led by a pair of seniors on Senior Night, Willapa Valley rolled through Chief Leschi in three sets, 25-13, 25-4, 25-9, in a Pacific 2B League match at Tenoski Gym on Monday.

Seniors Abby Hodel and Madison Huber led the Vikings (5-2, 7-6) with six kills each to help fuel the victory.

“We came out a little bit slow at the start, but mid first match we picked it up,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said. “We served the ball hard and that made the difference in the match.”

In set two, Grace Hodel helped the Vikings shut the door on the Warriors by serving the final 15 points of the set. Grace Hodel finished with 100 percent service and four aces on the night, while Madison Huber was 100 percent in service with three aces. Hannah Cook also served 100 percent for Valley.

The Vikings also won the JV match, 25-6, 25-3, 15-3, and finished undefeated this season.

“Obviously, we came out cold in the first game,” North Beach head coach Jessica Preisinger said. “In game two, it was the best game we’ve played all season. I’m glad the girls saw that and believe in their potential. We have the elements, but the girls need to belief.”

Reilly Moore was cited for her short net game and was credited with nine assists, while middle blockers Helen Garman and Melia Atkins were cited for their work at the net.

On Wednesday, North Beach (2-5, 4-8) travels to South Bend in a key league finale.

BOYS GOLF

District IV 1A Tournament

TUMWATER — Hoquiam’s John Sand holds an 8-shot lead after shooting a 69 on the first day of the District IV 1A Boys Golf Tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course on Monday.

The senior birdied three of the final five holes to card a score of a 3-under par 69. Sand was one of nine Grays Harbor golfers and four Hoquiam players to make the cut of 91. Hoquiam’s Josh Burgher sits in fourth place with an 80, while teammate Ryan Cole shot an 89 and Brayden Dayton came in with a 91 for the Grizzlies.

“The conditions started out pleasant and then the weather turned and it became quite rainy and miserable,” Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko said. “We had multiple rulings for plugged balls and minimal roll in the fairways. John played extremely well under the circumstances. He had five birdies.”

Montesano had three golfers move onto the second day of the tournament. Kyler Doll and Matthew Plato each turned in rounds of 89, while Noah Quinn finished on the cut with a 91 on Monday.

Elma’s Trace Thompson and Cody Robinette each fired rounds of 83 to tie for fifth place and advance.

While the individual title will be decided by a two-day total, the team title will be determined by the scores on the final day alone.
