Monday Roundup: Hoquiam edges Raymond-South Bend with overtime goal

Hoquiam freshman Brannon Gonzales scored three goals, including a game-winner in overtime, to defeat Raymond-South Bend on Monday in Hoquiam.

Gonzales scored off an assist from Santiago Martinez Ortiz in the 35th minute of the first half to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. Raymond-South Bend (3-5 overall, 2-5 1A Evergreen) tied the game with a goal just before the end of the first half to make it a 1-1 game at halftime.

Gonzales made it 2-1 with a goal off a Rene Garcia assist in the second half, but the Ravens tied the game before heading into overtime.

Neither team scored in the first overtime period, sending the game to a second five-minute overtime session. In the second overtime, Gonzales gained a scoring opportunity after receiving a feed from Daniel Cortez Verdejo and was fouled inside the penalty area.

Gonzales converted the subsequent penalty kick to give Hoquiam (5-3, 5-2) the 3-2 victory.

“We came out expecting Raymond-South Bend to put up a fight tonight and it was a decent battle,” Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said. “Our guys showed composure tonight and were really communicating with each other. We have been focused on one game at a time and the guys are really starting to see what they can can get done as a team. … These guys are really building together and at this point in the season I am pleased with how they are looking on the field.”

Hoquiam hosts Forks at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Raymond-South Bend takes on Elma at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Elma.

Eatonville 1, Elma 0

An early goal and lack of offense led to Elma falling to Eatonville 1-0 in a 1A Evergreen League game on Monday in Eatonville.

Eatonville (6-2, 6-1 1A Evergreen) scored in the first five minutes of the game and held the lead throughout the remainder of the contest. Elma (5-5, 4-3) held possession for approximately 60% of the game and had multiple scoring chances, including two shots that rang off the post, one from Hank Doelman and another by Gregory Mendez.

“It felt like we were giving ourselves opportunities, we just were not putting it in the back of the net,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said.

Elma keeper Andy Salvatierra made several key saves, including racing off his line to make a stop late in the game to keep Elma in the contest.

The Eagles host Raymond-South Bend at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Montesano 12, Ilwaco 0

Montesano easily handed Ilwaco en route to a 12-0 victory on Monday in Montesano.

The league-leading Bulldogs (8-1, 7-0 1A Evergreen) scored in the very first minute of the game on a goal by Luke Clements and held a comfortable 3-0 lead with just under 10 minutes of game time elapsed.

Monte led 9-0 at halftime and totaled 32 shots in the game, 24 of those on target. Levi Clements and Mateo Sanchez each scored a hat trick while Jiovanny Torres scored twice for Monte.

Cristofer Tobar led the Bulldogs with three assists in the game.

The Bulldogs host Eatonville in a key 1A Evergreen League matchup at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
