Hoquiam picked up a key league win with a 2-1 upset over Elma on Monday in Elma.

The Grizzlies (2-3 overall, 2-2 1A Evergreen) got on the board when junior goal keeper Carlos Perez Orozco sent a ball forward to freshman forward Brannon Gonzales, who placed a shot into the upper corner for a 1-0 lead.

Elma scored just before half to tie the game at 1-1.

Gonzales scored his second goal of the game in the second half, converting a pass from junior defender Daniel Cortez-Verdejo to give Hoquiam a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute.

“It was a tough match, but every one of these guys fought through and stuck to the task at hand,” Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said. “Every player tonight was a player of the match, with all of them thinking about the greater good of the team and performing their tasks with intensity and the drive to help every other player on the team.”

With the win, Hoquiam moves into a three-way tie for fourth place in the 1A Evergreen League with Tenino and Raymond-South Bend.

The loss is Elma’s first league defeat of the season and drops the Eagles (4-3, 3-1) into a tie for second place with Eatonville.

Hoquiam hosts Ilwaco at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Elma plays at Forks at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Montesano 3, Tenino 0

Montesano stayed perfect in league play with a 3-0 lead over Tenino on Monday at Tenino High School.

The Bulldogs (5-1, 4-0 1A Evergreen) scored all three goals within the first 30 minutes of the game.

Monte got on the board in the first minute when Levi Clements scored off an assist from Cristofer Tobar.

Standout midfielder Felix Romero converted a feed from Spencer Lovell for a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute.

Senior captain Mateo Sanchez gave the Bulldogs the all-important three-goal lead with a shot off a Romero pass in the 30th minute.

Montesano dominated just about every facet of the game, outshooting Tenino (2-3, 2-2) 21-0 with 17 shots on target.

Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez said Tenino tried to use a physical style of play to disrupt the Bulldogs’ possession and control offense.

“Very sloppy game and very physical from Tenino, which was probably unnecessary from my point of view,” he said. “But nonetheless, they had a plan to disrupt what we wanted to do. Fortunately for us, it didn’t work out so well. … Good road win for us.”

Montesano sits alone in first place in the 1A Evergreen League and will face Raymond-South Bend at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Aberdeen 3, Tumwater 2

Aberdeen picked up its biggest win of the season thus far, beating defending state-champion Tumwater 3-2 on Monday in Tumwater.

Base hits were at a premium as the game featured two of southwest Washington’s top pitchers in Aberdeen starter Lilly Camp and Thunderbirds hurler Ella Ferguson.

And both pitchers lived up to the billing, combining to allow just four base hits with 21 strikeouts in the game.

Aberdeen scored two unearned runs in the top of the first before Tumwater tied the game in with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.

The Bobcats (4-3, 2-1 2A Evergreen) scratched across the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning.

After allowing a two-run triple to Tumwater’s Kylie Waltermeyer in the bottom of the third inning, Camp retired 12 straight before running into a bit of trouble late in the game.

With the tying run on third and winning run on first with two out in the bottom of the seventh, Camp got the dangerous Waltermeyer to fly out to end the threat, and the game.

“We played with confidence,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy McDaniel said. “We were confident in our approach leading up to this game, confident at the plate, confident in the field and confident in the dugout. They all understood the importance of this game and knew how the tone can be set for the season. We control how our games play out.”

Camp allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander threw 127 pitches – 79 for strikes – in earning the complete-game victory.

Ferguson was equally as impressive, allowing two earned runs on four hits with six walks and 13 strikeouts.

The win propels Aberdeen ahead of Tumwater (2-4, 1-2) for fourth place in the 2A Evergreen League.
