Cougars win in OT to win championship

The Central Park 5th-6th grade girls basketball team concluded its undefeated season on Saturday, Nov. 16 with an 18-16 overtime victory over McDermoth, clinching the girls 5th/6th grade championship in the process.

The Cougars finished the season with a perfect 6-0 record.

Former Grizzly Johnson named to All-NWC team

Former Hoquiam High School standout and current Linfield College running back, Artie Johnson, was named to the Northwest All-Conference First Team, the league announced on Monday.

Johnson, who graduated Hoquiam in 2016 and holds school records for most rushing yards in a single season (2,314) and single game (323), finished second in the NWC with 586 rushing yards (65.1 per game) and scored seven rushing touchdowns.

Johnson also caught 29 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns for 8-1 Linfield, which plays Chapman University at noon on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Aberdeen 1599, Montesano 1552

Up by just nine pins heading into the later rounds, Aberdeen won both Baker games to defeat Montesano 1,599-1,552 in a non-league match on Monday at Elma Lanes.

Led by consistent bowling from Maggie Reyes, Juli Villa and Sierra Hammond — each of whom scored no less than a two-game series of 269 — Aberdeen held a slim 1,290-1,281 lead after the first two games of the match.

Montesano was bolstered by Kaylee Lundgreen, who had the top score per game of the day (192, Game 2) and for the series (332).

Aberdeen widened its lead in the first Baker game, outscoring the Bulldogs 154-92 before holding on for the win as Monte won the second Baker game 179-155.

“Both teams improved from last week,” Aberdeen head coach Dave Bruncke said. “It was the two consistent Baker games that made the real difference.”

Montesano will take on Rochester at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Rochester.

Aberdeen next match is against Shelton at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2 at Westside Lanes.
