Monday Prep Roundup: Willapa Valley uses defense to earn win over Taholah

Vikings hold Chitwhins to less than 10 points in three of four quarters to pick up 48-35 victory

Willapa Valley played a strong game on the defensive end to pick up a 48-35 victory over Taholah on Monday at Taholah High School.

The Vikings (2-2 overall) held Taholah (0-3) to less than 10 points in three of the game’s four quarters to pick up the road victory.

“Our defense played really well,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “The kids played really hard.”

Lanissa Amacher led Willapa Valley with 20 points to go along with six rebounds.

Chayse Coady scored nine points while Ana Chavez recorded eight points and two steals for the Vikings.

Willapa Valley’s Hannah Hamilton led the Vikings with 10 rebounds, her fourth double-digit rebounding performance to start the season.

The Vikings also got a big lift from junior point guard Brooklyn Patrick, who made her season debut after dealing with an injury.

“She made world of difference,” Peterson said of Patrick, who scored eight points in the game. “She gets the ball in the right hands.”

Taholah was led by Noelani McCrory, who led the Chitwhins with 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Angel Ancheta and Natayla Russell scored seven points apiece for Taholah, which shot 14-for-53 (26%) from the field.

Willapa Valley shot 17-for-55 (31%), including 7-of-15 (47%) from the 3-point line, and had seven blocks as a team.

The Vikings also took care of the ball, turning the ball over a mere eight times in the contest.
