Eagles 7, Grizzlies 6
ELMA — Ignited by a five-run first inning, Elma withstood a late Hoquiam rally to take a critical Evergreen 1A League contest at Eagle Field.
Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the contest was moved up a day due to the threat of inclement weather.
The Eagles (1-0, 8-1) sandwiched singles by Molly Johnston, Olivia Cain, Morgan Thompson and Kassedy Olson around three Grizzly errors to build a 5-1 lead.
Elma took a 7-2 advantage into the seventh. Consecutive doubles by Maya Jump and Abbi Spradlin triggered a four-run Hoquiam outburst. But, with the potential tying run on second, Eagle reliever Destry Dineen retired the final two Grizzlies on groundouts to save the victory for starter Quin Mikel.
Jalyn Whipple drove in two runs for the Eagles.
“We got off to a good start,” Elma coach Roger Elliott acknowledged. “It was kind of a sloppy game on both parts, coming out of spring break.”
“We just didn’t seem ready to play,” said Hoquiam coach Keith Reynvaan. “We actually played pretty good ball from (the first inning) on. I guess you could say it was too little, too late.”
Weather permitting, the Eagles are scheduled to visit Montesano and Hoquiam (1-2, 5-2) will travel to La Center on Thursday.

Wildcats sweep
WESTPORT — Noah Martin and Cole Hatton led the attack as Ocosta swept Ilwaco, 8-1 and 8-3, in a Pacific 2B League doubleheader Monday at the GAR Park.
Martin went 3-for-3 and drove in a run in the opening game. He tripled and doubled and drove in three runs in the nightcap.
Hatton added three hits and two RBIs in the second game.
Ocosta pitcher Hatton, Zach Allton and Brandon Harnden allowed only five hits in two games, but suffered from uncharacteristic control difficulties. They issued 17 walks for the day.
“You never know what to expect after you had the whole week off,” Ocosta coach Mike Allton said. “I thought we were a little rusty on the mound. Nevertheless, I thought we hit the ball well enough to win and we played solid defense behind our pitchers.”
The Wildcats (7-1, 8-1) are idle until visiting North Beach for a doubleheader Tuesday.

TUMWATER —Aleeta Pratt continued her impressive play in singles, but Aberdeen fell to Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference opener Monday at Tumwater.
Pratt won in straight sets in the No. 1 singles match. Aberdeen’s Abbie Bradt and Molly Scroggs came close to pulling out a victory in the third doubles match of the day but ran out of gas at the end and dropped the tiebreak, 7-1.
Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said she saw reasons to be encouraged despite the loss.
“I’m finally starting to see how I can adjust the lineup a little bit,” she said. “Aleeta Pratt played a great and we had some good rallies in the third doubles match.”
Weather permitting, Aberdeen will be back on the court on Wednesday at Tumwater.
