BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Willapa Valley 54, Pe Ell 28

Willapa Valley got balanced scoring and used a big third quarter to defeat Pe Ell 54-28 in a 1B District 4 Tournament second-round game on Thursday in Menlo.

The Vikings (10-11 overall) and Trojans (7-13) started slow, with Valley leading 17-12 at halftime.

The game turned in the third quarter as Valley outscored Pe Ell 24-7 thanks in large part playing a higher-energy brand of basketball.

“We started out really slow in the first half. I thought we were playing tight, and were not executing our brand of basketball,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “The difference in the game was the third quarter. Offensively, we pushed the tempo and got good quality shots.”

Valley went 19 of 60 from the field (32%) and had nine players score in the game.

“We didn’t have anyone score in double figures as it was a balanced team effort,” Rask said.

Valley was led by sophomore guard Brody Ritzman with nine points and eight rebounds.

Junior forward Connor “Cheese” Keeton scored eight points while Nathan Fluke and Blane King had six rebounds apiece for Valley.

Pe Ell shot 9 of 49 from the floor (18%) against a stout Vikings defense.

“I thought our defense was really good all evening,” Rask said.

Valley advances to the district quarterfinals against Taholah at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Taholah High School.

Pe Ell was eliminated with the loss.

Willapa Valley 10 7 24 13 – 54

Pe Ell 5 8 7 8 – 28

Scoring: Willapa Valley – Ritzman 9, Keeton 8, Russell 7, Aust 7, Fluke 6, Swartz 6, King 5, Young 3, Blankenship 3.
