PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Forks 65, Hoquiam 58

Hoquiam’s trip north to face Pacific League-leading Forks didn’t work out to well for the Grizzlies in a 65-58 loss on Friday.

Hoquiam (6-6 overall) led 17-11 after one quarter thanks in large part to freshman guard Lincoln Niemi, who scored seven points in the frame.

Leading 37-32 at the half, the game got away from Hoquiam as the Grizzlies scored seven points and were outscored by nine in the third quarter.

Forks (9-5) finished off Hoquiam by outscoring the Grizzlies 17-15 over the final eight minutes of the game.

“I was hoping for us to play hard. They just out-hustled us tonight. We couldn’t get to the ball, they had sophomores ripping the ball out of our hands,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “We had a decent first quarter, but they just got to more balls than us.”

Hoquiam went 21 of 68 from the field (31%) and were led by sophomore guard Joey Bozich with 24 points, hitting eight 3-pointers in the contest.

Chris Bryson added 14 points for Hoquiam, but aside from that the Grizzlies struggled against the Spartans defense.

“They played a zone and we just didn’t shoot the ball like we normally would,” Coach Niemi said. “Other than that, they just out-hustled us and we couldn’t get the ball when we really needed to.”

The Grizzlies will look to snap a 3-game skid when they play at Montesano at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
