Monte, Hoquiam finish 1-2 in Elma

A pair of Hoquiam runners took the top two spots but it was Montesano’s depth that provided the team victory in the boys race at a 1A Evergreen League meet on Thursday at Vance Creek County Park in Elma.

Hoquiam’s brother duo of Adam and Alex Peterson took first and second place in the boys race with times of 17:53 and 18:09, respectively.

“They’re bringing the whole team to a new level of competition and hard work,” Hoquiam head coach Carly Giles said of her top two runners. “I’m anxious to see how they run and how they lead the team this year. We haven’t had anyone on the team with their kind of times for a few years now. It’s exciting to see them really bring it.”

Though Hoquiam held the top two spots, it was the Montesano Bulldogs — led by Martin Shuck’s third-place finish (18:10) — that won the overall team competiton with 28 points, eight points better than the Grizzlies. Tenino placed third with 65 points.

Monte’s Josef Aschenbrenner and Tucker Stecher ran identical 19:24 times to tie for fifth place. Tristan Bodwell (19:59, 8th) also finished in the top 10 for the Bulldogs.

Similar to the top boys runners, Peterson said the wet course conditions presented some challenges.

“The course being wet made me nervous about slipping,” she said. “But my strategy was to pretend like it was practice and I was running with the boys.”

Madelyn Olson ran a fourth-place time of 24:33 for the Bulldogs.

Hoquiam’s top runner was Jennifer Cole, who ran a 26:16 to place sixth out of 11 runners.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Hoquiam 2, Aberdeen 1

In a tie game between longtime rivals, Hoquiam midfielder Maya Jump’s goal from 30-yards out in the 65th minute propelled the Grizzlies to a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen on Thursday at Stewart Field.

Aberdeen held a 1-0 lead after Emma Green took a through pass from fellow team captain Emmy Walsh at the top of the 18-yard box and beat Hoquiam goaltender Jade Cox for an early 1-0 lead.

But the Grizzlies (3-1) tied the game just before halftime when sophomore forward Sadie Carlyle scored her team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from Jump to knot the game up at 1-1 in the 38th minute.

The game remained tied until Jump’s game-winner late in the game; a shot that hit the bottom edge of the crossbar and went into the back of the net to give the Grizzlies the 2-1 win. Taylor Strom picked up an assist on Jump’s goal.

“Anytime we play Aberdeen we know emotions are going to run high and it’s about how we react to them on the field,” said Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann, who admitted the aforementioned emotions had an impact on his team in the early going. “We told the girls to take a step back, take a deep breath and play the soccer we want to play.”

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming stated that in a back-and-forth contest, it came down to which team took advantage of its opportunities and made the fewest mistakes.

“We are just making too many mistakes and not taking advantage of our opportunities.” he said. “Credit Hoquiam with capitalizing on their few chances.”

Aberdeen drops to 1-3 on the season with the loss.

PREP GOLF

Hoquiam 149, Seton Catholic 196

The Hoquiam Grizzlies’ boys golf team shot a sub-150 score en route to downing Seton Catholic, 149-196, on Thursday at Highland Golf Course.

“I think that is our best Hoquiam score ever,” Hoquiam head coach Larry Dublanko pondered. ” One of our goals this season was to break 150. It’s a hard goal to beat. The guys played really well.”

The Grizzlies (4-0) were led by Brayden Dayton, who shot a career-best 34 for the 9-hole round.

Low scores were also posted by Hoquiam’s Josh Burgher (38), Michael Jump (40) and Tayte Witherbee (37), who Dublanko said had an “outstanding round.”

Though they have posted a sub-150 round and are undefeated through four matches, Dublanko acknowledged the Grizzlies have to be cautious not to let the early-season success go to their heads.

“We’ve reminded them that we haven’t left our home course yet,” Dublanko said, pointing out that all four of his team’s victories have come at the familiar confines of Highland Golf Course. “There is going to be courses we play where we have no familiarity. It’s going to be a blind undertaking and mentally challenging.”

Dublanko added that if his team is to continue posting scores near the 150 mark, they’ll have to play sound, intelligent golf.

“We’ll play the numbers,” he said. “It’s going to change our dynamics a bit to maintain these low scores.”

Hoquiam (149) — Dayton (34), Witherbee (37), Burgher (38), Jump (40)

Seton Catholic (196) — Dean Ball (40), John Trafalis (49), Nathan Lamberton (50), Cole Jackson (57)
