Local golfers in contention after first day fo state championships

Aberdeen’s Rajcich, Montesano’s Blancas in top 10 after first day

Some local Twin Harbors prep golfers are in the hunt for a top 10 position after the first round of the WIAA State Golf Championships on Tuesday.

Aberdeen’s Britt Rajcich is one of 10 golfers to shoot a sub-80 round in the 2A State Girls Golf Tournament on Monday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club. Rajcich is currently tied for eighth while teammate Saylor Heikkila placed 47th with a score of 106 over 18 holes of golf.

In the first round of the 2A boys tournament held at the Capitol City Golf Club in Olympia, Aberdeen’s Logan Seguin shot an 85 to place 51st.

In the 1A girls tournament, District 4 champion Hailey Blancas of Montesano shot an 88 to sit in a tie for sixth place, just four strokes out second place.

Hoquiam’s Minh Thi Butler (108, 27) and Montesano’s Iza Cope (112, 34th) and Maggi Kupka (115, 42) also competed in the 1A tournament on Monday at the Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

In the boys tournament, Hoquiam had four golfers compete on Monday (also at Indian Canyon). The Grizzlies were led by Mick Bozich, who placed 43rd with a score of 92. Nyeki Dayton (96, 49th), Riley Montoure (98, 53rd) and Tommy Wallace (102, 55th) also competed on Day 1 for Hoquiam.

Montesano’s Trey Sweeney shot a 102 to tie for 55th place after the first day of golf.

The tournaments are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday.
